DATE: Apr. 25, 2003
SUBJECT:
Poor Fit Between Windshield Header and Convertible Top
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves adjusting the convertible top header and if necessary repositioning the convertible top header receiver locator on the windshield header.
MODELS:
2004 (JR) Sebring Convertible
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Poor fit appearance and possible water and/or air leak where the convertible top meets the windshield at the top of the A-pillar. This Condition is due to the convertible top being adjusted too far rearward.
DIAGNOSIS:
Inspect the mating area of the convertible top and windshield header above the A-pillar, if a 3 mm (0.12 in.) or more gap is present between the convertible top header and the windshield header seal (Fig. 1), perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Raise the convertible top so the front section is positioned vertically.
2. Determine if the convertible top header can be adjusted forward by looking at the back/top side of the front rail casting and the A-pivot, (Fig. 2).
3. If the end of the adjustment slot can be seen, loosen both adjustment screws on the front/bottom side of the front rail casting (Fig. 3) with a T-30 torx bit, then pull the convertible top header up to eliminate the view of the adjustment slot (Fig. 2) and tighten the screws to 11-13 Nm (95-115 in. lbs.).
4. Lower the convertible top and latch it. If the fit and appearance of the convertible top to windshield header is satisfactory, check the other side of the vehicle and repeat steps 1-3 as necessary. If the fit and appearance are still unacceptable (Fig. 4) continue to step 5.
5. Unlatch the convertible top.
6. Remove the sun visor.
7. Remove both sun visor center support clips.
8. Pull the center windshield header trim panel rearward to disengage the attaching clips. Set the panel aside.
9. Pull the side windshield header trim panel rearward to disengage the attaching clip. Set the panel aside.
10. Use an appropriate marker to mark the position of the inboard and outboard edges of the cast convertible top header receiver on the windshield header (Fig. 5).
11. Remove the two nuts attaching the cast convertible top header receiver and discard.
12. Remove the receiver casting and set aside.
13. Remove the two double ended studs from the windshield header and discard.
14. Install the convertible top receiver to the windshield header positioning the receiver as far forward as possible and centered between the marks made in step 10.
15. Attach the convertible top receiver to the windshield header using two bolts, p/n 06101767. Torque the bolts to 24-27 Nm (210-235 in. lbs.)
16. Latch the convertible top. If the fit and appearance of the convertible top to windshield header is satisfactory, check the other side of the vehicle and repeat steps 5-15 as necessary. If the fit and appearance are still unacceptable, replacement of the windshield header seal, p/n 04878983AC will be required (normal service information procedures and time allowances should be used).
NOTE:
REPLACEMENT OF OTHER CONVERTIBLE TOP COMPONENTS SUCH AS THE HEADER AND SIDE RAILS WILL MAKE NO IMPROVEMENT FOR THIS FIT CONDITION AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED.
17. Install the side windshield header trim panel(s).
18. Install the center windshield header trim panel.
19. Install the sun visor center support clips.
20. Install the sun visor(s).
