Audio System - Steering Wheel Switches Inoperative

SUBJECT:
Steering Wheel Audio Controls Are Inoperative
MODELS:
2004 (JR) Sebring Convertible/Sebring Sedan/Stratus Sedan
DISCUSSION:
Steering wheel-mounted audio switches are a new option on 2004 JR-vehicles. In order for the switches to function, the Body Control Module (BCM) must learn the presence of the steering wheel-mounted audio switches. The BCM learns steering wheel-mounted audio switch presence when the radio is turned on AND either the volume up or volume down switch button (both on the steering wheel right-hand audio switch) is pressed and held down until the radio volume responds (between 0.5 and 2.0 seconds). All other steering wheel-mounted audio switches will then become functional.
The steering wheel-mounted audio switches will remain functional until a battery disconnect occurs or the Ignition Off Draw (IOD) M1 fuse is removed from the junction block. After either the battery is disconnected or the IOD fuse has been removed, the steering wheel-mounted audio switch learn procedure must be repeated for the steering wheel-mounted audio switches to function. Because the IOD fuse is removed during vehicle shipment, the dealer must perform the learn procedure during New Vehicle Preparation.
