Service Procedure

WARNING:
Do not remove the A/C drive belt tensioner locking bolt without first holding the tensioner with a 1/2" drive breaker bar, as personal injury could result.

1. Open the hood and locate the A/C drive belt tensioner (Figure 1).

2. Loosen but do not remove the tensioner locking bolt and pivot bolt (Figure 2).

3. Insert a 1/2" drive breaker bar into the square opening on the tensioner bracket. Rotate the tensioner counter-clockwise until the A/C drive belt can be removed from the idler pulley (Figure 2).

4. Using the breaker bar, slowly rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve the spring load.

5. Carefully remove the tensioner locking bolt and pivot bolt and then remove the tensioner assembly from the engine. Be careful not to drop the tensioner torsion spring.

6. Remove the idler pulley from the tensioner bracket. Discard the tensioner bracket.

7. Install the idler pulley onto the new tensioner bracket. Tighten the idler pulley bolt and nut to 250 in-lbs (28 N.m).

8. Assemble the tensioner torsion spring onto the new tensioner bracket. Insert the spring arm into the "USED" belt position on the tensioner bracket (Figure 3).

9. Loosely install the torsion spring, tensioner bracket and pivot bolt on to the engine (Figure 2). Tighten the pivot bolt only "finger tight" at this time.

10. Using a 1/2" breaker bar, apply counter-clockwise pressure on the tensioner bracket until the locking bolt can be installed (Figure 2). Tighten the locking bolt only "finger tight" at this time.

11. Install the original A/C drive belt by rotating the tensioner counter-clockwise until the belt can be installed on the pulley.

12. Slowly release the tensioner and then remove the breaker bar. The belt tension is automatically adjusted by the tensioner's torsion spring.

13. Tighten the tensioner locking bolt and pivot bolt to 250 in-lbs (28 N.m) (Figure 2).
