SUBJECT:
Rear Drum Brake Clunk Sound
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves installation of revised rear brake shoe hold down springs.
MODELS:
2003 (JR) Sebring Sedan/Stratus Sedan
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH REAR DRUM BRAKE (SALES CODE BRB) BUILT ON OCT. 7, 2002 (MDH 1007XX) THROUGH AND INCLUDING NOV.26, 2002 (MDH 1126XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A clunk sound may be heard coming from rear of vehicle when driving over a rough road surface.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the vehicle operator describes the above Symptom, drive the car over some rough pavement and listen for the clunk sound, if heard, drive over the same pavement again while the parking brake lever is pulled up 3 clicks. If the clunk sound goes away, perform the Repair Procedure. If the clunk sound remains with the parking brake pulled up 3 clicks, this bulletin does not apply and further diagnosis is required.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Raise vehicle on an appropriate hoist.
2. Remove rear wheel lug nuts.
3. Remove the rear tire/wheel assembly.
4. Remove the rear brake drum.
5. Locate leading brake shoe hold down spring. Remove the spring, all washer(s), and pin, then discard them, (Fig. 1).
6. Remove bottom of the leading shoe from the lower anchor area, move shoe rearward and disconnect lower return spring and discard it.
7. Install the revised lower anchor return spring from kit, p/n 50010186AA.
8. Reinstall the leading shoe to the lower anchor.
9. Install the revised hold down spring, pin and washer from kit, p/n 50010186AA onto the leading shoe.
10. Remove the trailing shoe hold down spring, all washer(s), and pin, then discard them.
11. Install the revised trailing shoe hold down spring, pin and washer from kit, p/n 50010186AA, onto the trailing shoe.
12. Visually inspect that both new hold down springs and lower anchor are fully seated with the hold down washers are locked.
NOTE:
ENSURE THE BRAKE DRUM IS FREE OF ANY FOREIGN MATERIAL/OBJECTS PRIOR TO INSTALLATION.
13. Reinstall the brake drum and tire/wheel assembly onto the wheel studs.
14. Reinstall lug nuts and torque to 130 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) in a "criss-cross" pattern.
15. Repeat step 2 through 15 on the opposite side of the vehicle.
16. Lower the vehicle.
