A/T - ATF Fluid Coloration/Filling Precautions

NUMBER: 21-003-03

GROUP: Transmission

DATE: Mar. 28, 2003

SUBJECT:
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Color

MODELS:

2003 (ST) Sebring Coupe/Stratus Coupe

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (SALES CODES DGI, DGB, OR DHD) BUILT ON AND INCLUDING FEBRUARY 7, 2003 THROUGH AND INCLUDING MARCH 3, 2003.

DISCUSSION:

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) delivery to the assembly plant did not have the appropriate red dye added during the refining process. The ATF color for the models listed above appears clear to slightly yellow/orange instead of the typical red color. Laboratory testing has confirmed the ATF meets all specifications and does not create any performance issues. It is not necessary to change the transmission fluid due to the lack of red dye. Since the fluid is nearly clear, it is difficult to see on the dipstick. When checking fluid level on one of these models, carefully check the dip stick level to avoid overfilling the transmission.
