Inspection Procedure 2

Tachometer does not work.

Tachometer Circuit:

CIRCUIT OPERATION
- The tachometer power is supplied from the ignition switch (IG) circuit.
- For vehicles with 2.4L engine, the tachometer detects the ignition signal by the engine control module or power control module via the ignition coils.
- For vehicles with 3.0L engine, the
tachometer detects the ignition signal control via the distributor assembly.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION (COMMENT)
The cause is thought to be because vehicle speed sensor or PCM signals are not transmitted or due to combination meter error.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
- Malfunction of the combination meter (printed circuit board or speedometer and
tachometer)
- Malfunction of the ECM <2.4L engine - M/T>
- Malfunction of the PCM <2.4L engine - A/T>
- Malfunction of the distributor <3.0L engine>
- Damaged wiring harness or connectors

DIAGNOSIS

Required Special Tools:
- MB991223: Harness Set
- MB991502: Scan Tool (MUT-II)

STEP 1. Check the tachometer by observing the other meters.
Check to see that the speedometer, fuel gauge and water thermometer operate normally.

Q: Do all other meters operate?

YES : Go to Step 2.
NO : Refer to INSPECTION PROCEDURE 5.

STEP 2. Using scan tool MB991502, read the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991502, always turn the ignition switch to LOCK (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.

1. Connect scan tool MB991502 to the data link connector.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON position.
3. Read the MFI system diagnostic trouble code.

Q: Are MFI system related DTC(s) set?

YES: Refer to Multiport Fuel Injection (MFI) Diagnosis <2.4L> or Multiport Fuel Injection (MFI) Diagnosis <3.0L>.
NO: Go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Check combination meter connector C-102, ECM connector C-116 , PCM connector C-114 and distributor assembly connector B-22 <3.0 L>for damage.

Q: Are combination meter connector C-102, ECM connector C-116 , PCM connector C-117
, C-119 and distributor assembly connector B-22 <3.0 L> in good condition?

YES: Go to Step 4.
NO: Repair or replace the connector(s). Refer to Harness Connector Inspection. The speedometer should work normally.

STEP 4. Check wiring harnesses between combination meter connector C-102 (terminal 40) and ECM connector C- 116 (terminal 58), PCM connector C-114
(terminal 43) or distributor assembly connector B-22 <3.0L> (terminal 2).

NOTE: Also check intermediate connectors C-25. If intermediate connectors C-25 is damaged, repair or replace the connector as described in Harness Connector Inspection.

Q: Are the wiring harnesses between combination meter connector C-102 (terminal 40) and ECM connector C-116 (terminal 58), PCM connector C-114
(terminal 43) or distributor assembly connector B-22 <3.0L> (terminal 2) in good condition?

YES: Go to Step 5.
NO: Repair the wiring harness(es). The speedometer should work normally.

STEP 5. Replace and check the combination meter.

Q: Does the
tachometer operate?

YES: There is no action to be taken.
NO: Replace the vehicle speed sensor or PCM . The tachometer should work normally.
