Repair Procedure

1. Use the refrigerant recovery unit to remove the refrigerant from the system.

NOTE:
Refer to the refrigerant recovery and recycling unit instruction manual for operation of the unit.

2. Raise the vehicle.

3. Remove 3 bolts and 3 push pins in order to remove the right front fender inner lower splash shield (Fig. 3).

4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the 2003 Sebring/Stratus Coupe Service Manual, Volume 4 (Publication No. 81-270-03031D) page 24-39.

5. Remove the suction hose from the A/C compressor.

CAUTION:
Seal the hoses completely, otherwise the compressor oil and receiver will absorb water vapor easily, possibly damaging the compressor and deteriorating performance. Plug the disconnected hoses and compressor openings to prevent foreign matter from getting into the system.

6. Remove the discharge hose from the A/C compressor.

7. Unplug the compressor clutch wiring connector.

8. Remove the four A/C compressor mounting bolts.

CAUTION:
When removing the compressor, be careful not to spill the compressor oil.

9. Remove the A/C compressor and place it on a suitable bench.

10. Remove the wiring connector bracket fastener and reposition out of the way.

11. Remove the pressure relief valve (Fig. 2).

12. Select the correct pressure relief valve from the replacement package.

13. Install the correct pressure relief valve. Torque the pressure relief valve to 12 Nm (106.2 in. lbs.).

14. Install the wiring connector bracket.

15. Before installing the compressor on the vehicle, fill it with compressor oil according to the following procedure.

a. Measure the amount of oil in the removed compressor [X cm3 (X floz)].

b. Use the formula to calculate the amount of oil necessary to replace the amount that was lost through the relief valve operation [Y cm3 (Y fl oz.)]. Then, refill the compressor with that amount of oil and install the compressor on the vehicle.

NOTE:
New compressor oil amount formula = 140 CM3 (3.4 FLOZ) 140 CM3
- X CM3 = Y CM3 (3.4 FLOZ - X FLOZ = Y FLOZ)

NOTE:
Y CM3 (Y floz) stands for the amount of oil used up due to the relief valve operation.

16. Install the compressor.

17. Install the four A/C compressor mounting bolts. Torque the mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

18. Plug the wiring harness connector into the compressor clutch wiring connector.

19. Using a new 0 ring, p/n MR117263, install A/C suction line on compressor. Torque the anchor bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

20. Using a new 0 ring, p/n MR117054, install A/C discharge line on compressor. Torque the anchor bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

21. Install the accessory drive belt.

22. Adjust the drive belt tension. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the 2003 Sebring/Stratus Coupe Service Manual, Volume 1 (Publication No. 81-270-030310) page 0-14 and 0-15.

23. Install the lower splash shield.

24. Lower the vehicle.

25. Use the refrigerant recovery and recycling unit, refill the A/C system with .91 - .95 lbs. (14.6 - 15.3 oz.) of R134A refrigerant.
