Engine Stumble/Misfire - MIL Illumination
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves decarbonizing the combustion chamber and installing new exhaust valve springs.
MODELS:
1998 - 2004 (LH) 300M/Concorde/Intrepid/LHS
1999 - 2002 (PR) Prowler
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO APRIL 1, 2003 (MDH 0401XX) EQUIPPED WITH A 3.2L OR 3.5L ENGINE (SALES CODES EGC, EGE, EGG, EGJ, EGK, EGW)
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Engine stumble and/or misfire. More noticeable during a light throttle tip-in or when transaxle goes into lockup (approximately 47 m.p.h.). MIL illumination with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0300 through P0306, individual or multiple cylinder misfire.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Diagnostic Scan Tool (DRBIII(R)) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures Manual, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed. If the condition(s) and/or DTC's listed are present, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED
NOTE:
THE NEW VALVE SPRINGS CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY WHITE DYE ON THE TOP COILS. THE NOMINAL SPRING FORCE OF THE REVISED EXHAUST SPRING IS 85 LBS. CLOSED AND 147 LBS. OPEN.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Perform the following Decarbonizing Procedure described below.
2. Install the revised exhaust valve springs, p/n 04892082AA, as described in Group 9 of the appropriate service manual.
3. Verify the misfire condition has been corrected.
Decarbonizing Procedure:
1. Operate the vehicle until engine reaches operating temperature.
2. Remove air inlet hose from throttle body.
3. With the engine at idle speed, spray the entire contents of Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner, p/n 04318001, directly into the throttle body Allow the engine to load up with the cleaner to the point of almost stalling out.
4. Shut the engine OFF after the entire can is ingested.
5. With the hood closed and the vehicle parked in an ambient temperature of 15°C (60°F) or greater, allow the vehicle to soak for two to three hours. This will ensure that the engine will maintain its temperature and will allow proper solvent penetration.
6. Drive the vehicle to fully warm the engine.
7. Place the gear selector in "L". On a suitable road that will allow the vehicle to be driven safely at the posted speed limit, accelerate the vehicle until the engine reaches 4500 RPM.
8. Hold the engine speed at this RPM for 15 seconds.
9. Slow down and pull to the side of the road, allow the engine to idle for five seconds.
10. Repeat Steps 7 through 9 two more times.
