Interior - Instrument Panel Vinyl Skin Damaged/Blemished

SUBJECT:
Instrument Panel Vinyl Skin Replacement

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacing the Instrument Panel (IP) vinyl skin instead of the complete instrument assembly when only the vinyl portion of the IP is damaged/blemished.

MODELS:
2001 - 2002 (JR) Sebring Sedan/Sebring Convertible/Stratus Sedan

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Vinyl surface of IP is damaged or blemished.

DIAGNOSIS:

Inspect the IP, if the damage/blemish only effects the vinyl portion of the IP, perform the Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative remote cable.

2. Remove one screw to shift knob and transmission range indicator bezel from floor console.





3. Remove floor center console. (Fig. 1)

a. Raise the parking brake as high as possible.

b. Move the transmission shift lever to the Neutral position.

c. Loosen the set screw on the front of the shifter lever knob and remove the knob.

d. Remove the lighted transmission range indicator bezel, disconnect the bezel wire connector and set the bezel aside.

e. Remove screws next to the shifter and in the console storage compartment.

f. Disconnect the wire connector for the floor console at the floor pan and remove the console.

4. Remove the IP kick shield.

a. Remove push pin near accelerator pedal.

b. Unsnap kick shield from the right lower IP trim.

5. Remove the right and left IP end covers.

a. Open the front doors.

b. Use a plastic trim stick to disengage clips holding the end covers to the IP

6. Remove the left lower IP trim.

a. Use a plastic trim stick to pry the power mirror switch and bezel assembly out of the IP

b. Disconnect the wire connector and set the assembly aside.

c. Remove the five screws to the left lower IP trim and disconnect the deck lid release wire connector. Remove and set the trim panel aside.

7. Remove the IP center bezel.

a. Use a plastic trim stick to gently pry the on the edge of the IP center bezel/HVAC control assembly and pull outward.

b. Disconnect the HVAC control wire connector and set the assembly aside.





8. Remove the one IP inboard bezel retaining screw, then use a plastic trim stick to gently pry out and remove the inboard bezel. (Fig. 2)





9. Remove the one right IP trim bezel retaining screw, then use a plastic trim stick to gently pry out and remove the right IP trim bezel. (Fig. 3)





10. Remove the cluster bezel screws.

11. Use a plastic trim stick to gently pry out IP cluster bezel. If the vehicle is equipped with a compass/mini-trip computer, disconnect the wire connector and then remove cluster bezel assembly.

12. Remove the radio.

13. Use a plastic trim stick to gently pry out CD changer trim bezel, remove the CD player, and CD support bracket, if so equipped.

14. Unsnap right A/C barrel and remove A/C housing (3 screws).

15. Remove glove box.

a. Open glove box.

b. Push in on the sides of the glove box bin and lower the door.

c. Rotate the glove box downward and disengage the hinge hooks from the IP, then remove and set aside the glove box.

16. Remove attaching screws and remove the right lower IP trim.

17. Remove cubby bin mat (if so equipped).

18. Disconnect the passenger air bag wire connector.

19. Remove two nuts and two screws attaching the passenger air bag to the IP collar. The nuts are located on the outer sides of the air bag near the top of the IP The two screws are at the bottom of the air bag.

20. Disengage the air bag door tabs form the IP retainer and lift the air bag up and out of the IP.

21. Use a plastic trim stick to gently pry out and remove both A-pillar trim covers.

22. Use a plastic trim stick to disengage the clips holding the rear edge of the top cover to the IP.

23. Pull the top cover rearward to disengage hooks holding the front of the top cover to the IP.

24. Remove the top cover from the vehicle.

25. Remove IP speakers (if so equipped).

26. Tilt the steering wheel to its lowest position and depress the hazard flasher switch.

27. Remove instrument cluster attaching screws.

28. Pull the cluster rearward to disconnect the 26-way self docking connector and then carefully tilt the cluster downward slightly and slide the cluster sideways to remove the cluster from the vehicle.





29. Remove 2 screws (# 4 and # 5) attaching the vinyl skin to the beam assembly through passenger air bag opening. Refer to (Fig. 5) for screw call-out locations.

30. Remove 2 screws (# 6 and # 7) attaching the vinyl skin to the beam assembly below passenger air bag opening.

31. Remove 3 screws (# 2, # 3 and # 18) attaching the vinyl skin to the left, right-center, and right A/C ducts.

32. Remove 2 screws (# 1 and # 16) attaching the vinyl skin the through cluster opening.

33. Remove 4 screws (# 8, # 9, # 10 and # 11) attaching the vinyl skin in the center stack area (2 at HVAC control opening, 2 at radio opening).

34. Remove 4 screws (# 12, # 13, # 14 and # 15) attaching the vinyl skin the around steering column area. Position steering column as required to access screw heads.

35. Remove 1 screw (# 17) attaching the vinyl skin on the left outboard corner to multi-function junction block bracket.

36. Remove 2 screws (# 23 and # 24) attaching the defroster duct. Remove defroster duct.

37. Remove 4 screws (# 19, # 20, /# 21 and # 22) along where rearward edge of top cover fits.

38. Remove 2 IP steering column to cowl plenum screws (# 30 and # 31).

39. Remove 5 IP to plenum screws (# 25, # 26, # 27, # 28 and # 29).

40. Remove IP vinyl skin.

41. Remove the right demister grille.

42. Install the right demister grille into the replacement IP vinyl skin.

43. Place the replacement IP vinyl skin in position.

44. Install and finger tighten the screws that attach the skin to the vehicle in the sequence shown in (Fig. 5). Final tightening of the screws should be done in the same sequence and to a torque of 1.7 - 2.6 Nm (15 - 23 in. lbs.).

45. Carefully place the instrument cluster into position and push the cluster forward to engage the wiring connector. Install the attaching screws.

46. If equipped install the IP speakers, transfer the four speed nuts from the removed vinyl skin and install on the replacement skin. Install the IP speakers.

47. Place the passenger air bag into the IP cavity.

48. Press the air bag tabs down to engage the IP retainer.

49. Install the two nuts on the outer sides of the air bag and the two screws at the bottom front of the air bag. Torque the fasteners to 6.5 - 8.5 Nm (58 - 75 in. lbs.).

50. Connect the air bag wire connector.

51. Place the IP top cover in position in the vehicle.

52. Push the top cover forward to engage hooks to hold the top cover to the IP

53. Engage the clips to hold the rear edge of the top cover to the IP

54. Pull the top cover rearward as you firmly push down and snap in place.

55. Install the A-pillar trim.

56. Install the cubby bin mat (if so equipped).

57. Install the right lower IP trim onto the IP beam.

a. Position the right lower IP trim onto the IP beam.

b. Install the lower right screw first to assure proper alignment of the glove box door. Then install the 4 remaining screws around the glove box opening.

c. Install the right outboard screw.

d. Install the two screws above the glove box door opening.

e. Install the two screws below the radio opening.

f. Install the screws along the left end of the panel.

58. Install the glove box.

a. Place the glove box in position.

b. Engage the hinge hooks into the IP and rotate the glove box upward.

c. Push in on the sides of the glove box bin and snap glove box assembly into the IP

d. Close the glove box door.

59. Install right A/C housing and 3 screws. The bottom screw is the hex head screw.

60. Install right A/C barrel.

61. If so equipped, install the CD support bracket, CD changer and CD changer trim bezel.

62. Install the radio. Torque the screws to 3 Nm (30 in. lbs.).

63. Position the cluster bezel assembly and if the vehicle is equipped with a compass/mini-trip computer, connect the wire connector and then press/snap the bezel into place.

64. Install the five cluster bezel screws.

65. Install the IP inboard bezel.

66. Install the right IP trim bezel.

67. Connect the HVAC control wire connector.

68. Position the center bezel over the retaining slots and firmly press the center bezel into place.

69. Install the left lower IP trim.

a. Connect the deck lid release wire connector.

b. Position the panel over the retaining slots and firmly press in place.

c. Install the five screws to the left lower IP trim.

d. Connect the power mirror switch wire connector.

e. Position the power mirror switch and bezel assembly over the retaining slots and firmly press in place.

70. Position the left IP end cover over the retaining slots and firmly press in place.

71. Position the right IP end cover over the retaining slots and firmly press in place.

72. Snap kick shield onto the right lower IP trim.

73. Install push pin in hole near accelerator pedal through into HVAC unit.

74. Install the floor center console.

. Position the console in the vehicle.

b. Connect the wire connector for the floor console at the floor pan.

c. Verify the rear locator pin on the bottom of the storage bin is engaged in the slot in the body bracket and the front pin is engaged to the shifter mechanism.

d. Install the screws next to the shifter and in the console storage compartment.

e. Connect the lighted transmission range indicator bezel wire connector and install the bezel.

f. Install the shifter lever knob and tighten the set screw on the front of the knob.

75. Connect a DRBIII(R) to the data link connector.

76. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and exit the vehicle with the DRBIII(R).

77. After insuring no one is in the vehicle, connect the battery negative cable.

78. Read and record the ACTIVE Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) data.

79. Read and record any STORED DTC's.

80. Refer to the appropriate Body Diagnostic Procedures Manual if any DTC's are found in steps 78 or 79.

81. Erase stored DTC's if there are no active codes. If problems remain, DTC's will not erase. Refer to the appropriate Body Diagnostic Procedures Manual to diagnose the problem. If the air bag warning lamp either fails to light or comes ON and remains ON, there is a system malfunction. Refer to the appropriate Body Diagnostic Procedures Manual to diagnose the problem. To test the air bag warning lamp operation in the cluster press and hold the odometer reset button and turn the ignition switch from lock to unlock, a cluster self test will be initiated that includes the air bag lamp. Repair as necessary

82. Set the clock to the correct time.
