Passenger Airbag
NON DEPLOYED MODULEWhen removing a module for any reason other than DEPLOYMENT.
The instrument panel must be PARTIALLY removed for Passenger Airbag Module service. Refer to Instrument Panel and Systems for graphics of complete I/P.
REMOVAL
1. Open hood and disconnect the negative battery cable remote terminal from the remote battery post.
2. Remove the four screws that attach the glove box door to the instrument panel and remove the glove box door.
3. Remove right instrument panel endcap.
4. If equipped with center console:
- Remove the gearshift handle set screw and then remove the gear shift handle.
- Remove the console shifter bezel.
- Remove the right console side trim panel.
Glove Box Close - Out To Reinforcement:
5. Accessing through the glove box door, remove five screws to the glove box close-out assembly (20 in. lbs.) torque.
6. Remove the left and right A-pillar trim moldings.
7. Remove the left instrument panel endcap.
8. Remove the left lower instrument panel trim cover. Disconnect the hood release cable and decklid release electrical connector. Remove and set panel aside.
9. Remove the left knee blocker.
10. Remove the instrument panel center bezel. Disconnect the heater - a/c control unit and traction control switch (if equipped), electrical connectors.
11. If equipped with console, remove the left instrument panel side cover.
12. If not equipped with center console, remove the center lower instrument panel floor bin.
13. Remove the two center instrument panel lower attaching nuts.
14. Remove the left (driver's) side air distribution ducts.
15. Disconnect the brake switch electrical connector.
16. Remove the bulkhead connector mounting screw.
NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the bulkhead connector.
17. Disconnect the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) electrical connector.
18. Disconnect the two center instrument panel ground eyelets on the left side of the floor tunnel.
19. Remove the four steering column nuts and lower the steering column to the floor.
20. Remove the three lower left instrument panel mounting bolts.
21. Remove the three upper left instrument panel mounting bolts.
22. Disconnect the instrument panel to body harness electrical connector.
23. Disconnect the radio antenna connector.
24. Remove the three lower right instrument panel mounting bolts.
25. Remove the three upper right instrument panel mounting bolts.
26. Pull the right side of the instrument panel back and set on right (passenger side) seat to access the passenger airbag module.
NOTE: The instrument panel does not have to be removed any more than this for passenger airbag service.
27. Remove four screws to the right demister duct (20 in. lbs.) torque.
28. Remove two screws to the right distribution duct assembly (20 in. lbs. torque).
29. Disconnect the yellow wire harness connector from the airbag module assembly and the three Christmas tree fasteners.
Instrument Panel And Pad Assembly:
30. Remove the right and left pencil strut to Passenger Airbag screws (45 in. lbs.) torque.
31. Disconnect the instrument panel wiring harness from the airbag reinforcement bracket.
32. Remove four 10 mm hex head screws to the deployment door reinforcement - two screws per side (75 in. lbs.) torque.
33. Remove five screws from the passenger airbag module assembly to retainer (20 in. lbs. torque).
34. Remove the airbag module assembly from the instrument panel retainer.
Reinforcement To Passenger Airbag:
35. Remove four screws to the reinforcement brace on the old airbag module (20 in. lbs.) torque.
INSTALLATION
1. Install the reinforcement bracket on to the new airbag module. Tighten to 20 in.lbs. (2.3 N.m).
For installation, reverse the above procedures. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing for Airbag System Test procedures.
DEPLOYED MODULE
The instrument panel must be removed for DEPLOYED Passenger Airbag Module service.
REMOVAL
When removing a deployed module: rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the surface which could irritate the skin and eyes.
1. Open hood and disconnect the negative battery cable remote terminal from the remote battery post.
2. Roll or fold the passenger airbag towards the instrument panel surface and tuck into instrument panel into module area. Then tape the ripped instrument panel pad over the deployed airbag.
3. Remove instrument panel and pad assembly. Refer to Instrument Panel and Systems, for Removal and Installation.
4. Remove Passenger Airbag Module. Refer to Passenger Airbag Removal and Installation for a Non-Deployed Module.
INSTALLATION
1. Transfer all instrument panel components which are not damaged to NEW instrument panel and pad assembly. Tighten screws to 2 N.m (20 in. lbs.) torque.
2. For Installation of Passenger Airbag Module, reverse procedures outlined in the Non Deployed Module removal procedure.
3. For installation of the instrument panel, reverse the procedures outlined in Instrument Panel and Systems.
4. Do not connect battery negative cable remote terminal. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing for Airbag System Test procedures.
