SUBJECT:
Snapping Sound When Opening Or Closing Front Door
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves adjusting the lower fender cladding and/or shimming the cladding outward.
MODELS:
1999 - **2002 (LH) 300M/Concorde**
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A snapping sound may be heard when either front door is opened or closed. The noise may be mistaken as the door check strap.
DIAGNOSIS:
Inspect the front door to lower fender/cladding for signs of contact, gap, and flushness (Fig. 1). The gap must be 5.0mm or greater and the molding no greater than 1.5 mm under flush to the door in the area of concern. Inspect for the presence of four lower cladding attaching clips. If any clips are missing, install clip(s) and snap into body opening. If there are signs of contact or the gap and/or flushness requirements are out of specification, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. If the door to lower fender/cladding gaps are less than 5.0 mm, pull/peel back weatherstrip and loosen the cladding screw at the B-pillar (Fig. 2). Slide the cladding forward until the gaps in the area of concern are 5.0 mm or greater; tighten the cladding screw and install the weatherstrip.
2. If the cladding is under flush to the door by more than 1.5 mm, remove the cladding rivet located beneath the door hinge on the forward portion of the cladding (Fig. 3). In this area, insert one spacer, p/n 04278662, by pulling the cladding away from the body. Place the spacer between the cladding and body approximately 25 mm below the slot from where the rivet was removed. Install a new rivet, p/n 06501559.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other side if necessary.
