Removal

NOTE:
- Before proceeding, review Service Precautions.
- When replacing the rear brake shoes on this vehicle, remove the brake shoes from only one side of the vehicle at a time. This is due to the automatic adjustment feature of the park brake system. If the brake shoe assemblies are removed from both rear wheels at the same time the adjuster will remove all the slack from the park brake cables, making installation of the brake shoes extremely difficult.

1. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a hoist.
2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies from the vehicle.

3. Remove rear brake drum to hub retaining clips (if equipped). Then remove rear brake drum from hub and bearing assembly.

4. Remove the automatic adjuster lever actuating spring from the leading brake shoe. Then remove the automatic adjuster actuating lever from the leading brake shoe.

5. Thread the automatic adjuster star wheel all the way into the adjuster, removing all tension from the adjuster. Then remove the upper return spring from the brake shoes.

6. Remove the brake shoe lower return spring.

7. Remove the hold down spring and attaching pin from the leading brake shoe.
8. Remove the leading brake shoe from the brake support plate.

9. Remove the automatic adjuster from the trailing brake shoe and park brake actuating lever.
