Shift Linkage: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Fig. 36:





1. Remove shifter handle and console bezel (Fig. 36).
2. If equipped with Autostick, disconnect the Autostick switch connector.

3. Loosen adjuster nut on shifter adjuster (Fig. 37).

4. Loosen locking clip on interlock cable (Fig. 38).

5. Disconnect shifter cable from shift pin (Fig. 39).
6. Disconnect interlock cable from shifter base slot (Fig. 38). Be careful not to break tab on interlock cable conduit end fitting.

7. Remove the five floor pan attaching nuts from the shifter base and shift cable bracket (Fig. 36).
8. Remove shifter assembly from vehicle (Fig. 36).

INSTALLATION

1. Install shifter assembly (Fig. 36).
2. Install five shifter/cable bracket to floor pan nuts and tighten to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).
3. Make sure shift lever and transaxle are in "Park."

CAUTION: Park sprag must be engaged when adjusting linkage. Rock vehicle back and forth to ensure that park sprag is fully engaged.

4. With the ignition in the lock position, attach shift cable eyelet to shift pin (Fig. 39).

5. Slip interlock cable core wire into interlock adjustment lever groove (Fig. 38). Make sure the interlock cable slug is seated in the groove.
6. Slip interlock cable conduit end fitting into base and snap into place (Fig, 38).
7. If equipped with Autostick, connect the Autostick connector.
8. Adjust gear shift and interlock cables.

NOTE: Gearshift and interlock cables MUST be adjusted. Refer to the Adjustments for the correct procedures.
