Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

Before diagnosing or servicing the fuel injection system, perform a visual inspection for loose, disconnected, or misrouted wires and hoses. A thorough visual inspection that includes the following checks saves unnecessary test and diagnostic time.

Power Distribution Center:

1. Remove the Power Distribution Center (PDC) cover. Check for blown fuses. Ensure all relays are properly installed.
2. Check the battery terminal connections for loose cables and corrosion.

MAP Sensor:

3. Check the MAP sensor electrical connection.

Idle Air Control Motor:

4. Ensure the electrical connector is completely attached to the idle air contact motor.
5. Ensure electrical connector is attached to the throttle position sensor.

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor:

6. Verify the electrical connector is attached to the engine coolant temperature sensor.
7. Ensure purge hose is connected to throttle body.

Short Runner Valve:

8. Ensure the vacuum hose is connected to the Short Runner valve and the vacuum harness.

Proportional Purge Solenoid:

9. Ensure the Proportional Purge solenoid electrical connectors are attached to the solenoid.

Air Cleaner Housing:

Air Cleaner Element:

10. Inspect the air cleaner filter element. Replace as necessary.

PCM Connectors:

11. Verify the 2 40-way connector is fully inserted into the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Ensure the wires are not stretched or pulled out of the socket.
12. Ensure the accessory drive belt tension is correct.

Generator:

13. Check for loose or corroded connections at the generator.
14. Check fuel supply tube connections for leaks.

Crankshaft Position Sensor:

15. Verify electrical connector is attached to the crankshaft position sensor.

Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor:

Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor:

16. Ensure the electrical connectors are attached to the upstream heated oxygen sensors.

Downstream Heated Oxygen Sensor:

17. Ensure the electrical connectors are attached to the downstream heated oxygen sensors.

Starter Motor:

18. Check for loose or corroded electrical connections at the starter motor.
