A/C Bracket/Oil Pump - Knocking Noise

Knocking Noise From Engine Compartment Or Possible Oil Pump Damage

MODELS:
1998 (FJ) Avenger/Sebring

NOTE:
THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.5L ENGINE BUILT PRIOR TO JAN. 8, 1998 (MDH O1O8XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A knocking noise may be heard coming from the front of the engine when the A/C compressor cycles or the oil pump may become damaged. This condition may be caused by interference between the A/C bracket and the oil pump.








DIAGNOSIS:

Check for interference between the A/C bracket and the oil pump case (Figure 1 and 2). If interference is noted, operate the A/C system and listen for a knocking noise coming from the front of the engine. If oil pump damage is noted, inspect the oil pump case, seals and sealing surface. If interference is found between the A/C bracket and the oil pump along with any of the conditions described, perform the Repair Procedures as shown.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 MR298598 Bracket, A/C Compressor

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the A/C compressor bracket with a modified part and if necessary repairing the damaged oil pump.

1. Following the procedures on page 24-30 of the 1998 Sebring/Avenger service manual publication number 81-270-8117, replace the compressor bracket with p/n MR298598.

2. If oil pump damage is noted, thoroughly inspect the oil pump case, seals and sealing surface for damage (Figure 2). Pay close attention to the oil pump to block mounting bushings. Replace damaged components as necessary. Follow the procedures listed on page 9B-51 of the service manual.
