DATE: Dec. 19, 1997
SUBJECT:
Alternate ABS Diagnostic Code Retrieval
MODELS:
1998 (FJ) Avenger/Sebring/Talon
DISCUSSION:
The ABS Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) can be accessed by actuating a procedure where the ABS (amber) warning light will blink the DTC. Listed below is a procedure to retrieve and erase codes without using a scan tool.
PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves grounding pin 1 of the 16 way data link connector and reading or erasing ABS trouble codes.
1. Using a jumper wire, ground pin 1 of the 16 way data link connector (Figure 1).
2. Turn the ignition switch to "ON". The diagnostic trouble codes will begin to flash on the amber ABS warning lamp. The first digit of the code will be represented by slow flashes and the second digit will be represented by quick flashes (Figure 2).
3. The diagnostic trouble code can be erased by turning the ignition switch to "ON" while the brake pedal is depressed. Quickly operate the brake pedal 10 times in succession according to Figure 3. The data link connector pin 1 must be grounded. After the code is erased, the ABS warning lamp will flash quickly and continuously.
NOTE:
THE DTC CANNOT BE ERASED IF THE STOP LAMP SWITCH IS NOT TURNED ON AND OFF ACCORDING TO THE TABLE OR IF THE GENERATOR L TERMINAL VOLTAGE INCREASES TO A HIGH VOLTAGE STATE.
