Convertible Top - Operates Slowly

NO: 23-32-98

GROUP: Body

DATE: Jul. 31, 1998

SUBJECT:

Convertible Top
Operates Slowly
After Pump/Motor Or
Cylinder Replacement

MODELS:

1998 JX Sebring Convertible

DISCUSSION:

The convertible top operates slowly after a top pump/motor or hydraulic cylinder replacement. The slow operation will occur if a 1996-1997 top motor/pump is installed with a 1998 hydraulic cylinder or a 1996-1997 hydraulic cylinder is installed with a 1998 pump/motor assembly.

Revisions were made to the 1998 top pump/motor and hydraulic cylinders.

Due to these changes, the 1996-1997 components are not interchangeable with the 1998 components.

The 1996-1997 pump/motor is larger in diameter 76.2 mm (3" dia.) than the 1998 pump/motor 63.5 mm (2-1/2" dia.) (Figure 1).

The 1996-1997 hydraulic cylinder is larger in diameter 44.45 mm (1-3/4" dia.) than the 1998 hydraulic cylinder 31.75 mm (1-1/4" dia.) (Figure 2).

NOTE:
EACH TIME THE CONVERTIBLE TOP HYDRAULIC COMPONENTS ARE REPLACED THE SYSTEM MUST BE BLED FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURE IN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 23-60-96.

Replacement parts should be ordered by model year of the vehicle.
