Spark Plug: Description and Operation

Resistor spark plugs are used in all engines and have resistance values of (6,000 to 20,000) ohms when checked with at least a 1,000 ohm tester. Do not use an ohm meter to check the resistance of the spark plugs. This will give an inaccurate reading.

Remove the spark plugs and examine them for burned electrodes and fouled, cracked or broken porcelain insulators. Keep plugs arranged in the order in which they were removed from the engine. An isolated plug displaying an abnormal condition indicates that a problem exists in the corresponding cylinder. Replace spark plugs at the recommended intervals.

Always tighten spark plugs to the specified torque. Over tightening can cause distortion and change spark plug gap. Tighten spark plugs to 28 Nm (20 ft lb) torque.

This engine uses platinum spark plugs.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to adjust the gap of a platinum plug. Cleaning of the platinum plug may damage the platinum tip.

If carbon deposits must be removed, use a plug cleaner and complete cleaning within 20 seconds to protect electrode. Do not use a wire brush.
