Steering Column Overhaul
Fig.15 Exploded View Of Steering Column:
1. Remove steering column as outlined under "Steering Column, Replace."
2. Disassemble steering column in sequence shown noting the following:
a. Apply grease to inside lip of boot, then remove boot while using a suitable rod to widen lip of boot.

b. Apply grease to inside lip of inner cover and cover joint while using a suitable rod to widen lip section, then widen inner cover from behind with a suitable rod and pull cover to remove from joint.

c. If steering lock cylinder is to be removed, cut special bolts at bracket side with a hacksaw.
3. Inspect steering column as follows:
a. Inspect steering shaft for play and round movement.
b. Inspect joints for play, damage, or rough movement.
c. Inspect joint bearing for wear and damage.
d. Inspect dust shield for damage.
4. Reverse procedure to assemble, noting the following:
a. When installing steering lock cylinder and steering lock bracket, temporarily install steering lock in alignment with column boss.
b. After ensuring steering lock operates correctly, tighten special bolts until heads twist off.
c. Cover inside lip of inner cover with grease and pull outside of cover onto joint.
d. Fill inside of bearing with multipurpose grease, then install bearings to shaft on joint assembly.
e. Wrap vinyl tape 1 1/2 times around concave circumferences of bearings, then press fit bearing into cover assembly.
f. Apply grease to inside of lip section of boot, then install boot to joint.
