Procedure B
(ALIGNS PIS BRACKET WITH SHIMS)1. Remove the power steering belt using the procedures listed in the appropriate service manual.
2. Remove the power steering pump from its bracket. Hang pump to one side.
3. Remove the upper attachment bolt from the P/S pump mounting bracket (Figure 4) and loosen, but do not remove, the bracket attachment bolt to the engine block and the front bolt for the engine mount.
4. Insert 1 or 2 shims p/n MA111832 between the P/S bracket and the front engine mount at the upper bolt location (Figure 4). In most cases 2 shims will correct the mis-alignment.
5. Install the power steering belt and adjust the tension with a tension gauge at the middle of the belt to 93 - 115 lbs.. On non A/C equipped vehicles, tighten the bolts to 39 Nm (29 ft. lbs.). On A/C equipped vehicles, use the idler pulley adjustment bolt to achieve proper belt tension.
NOTE:
CORRECT BELT TENSION IS CRITICAL TO APPROPRIATE OPERATION. IF USING A NEW BELT, IT SHOULD BE TENSIONED TO THE UPPER END FO THE SPECIFICATION. AFTER TENSIONING, RUN THE ENGINE AND RE-CHECK THE TENSION. LOW TENSION WILL RESULT IN NOISE OR BELT LOSS AND EXCESS TENSION WILL RESULT IN ABNORMAL WEAR TO THE PUMP PULLEY SHAFT.
6. Recheck alignment before returning vehicle to the customer.
NOTE:
THE ENGINE MUST BE MOMENTARILY STARTED TO RE-ALIGN THE BELT. RECHECK BELT ALIGNMENT WITH THE ENGINE NOT RUNNING.
