OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves performing one of two procedures (depending on build range) to align the power steering system.
MODELS:

NOTE:
THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.0L NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE (NON TURBO). SEE PROCEDURE "A" FOR VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO SEPT 19, 1997 (MDH 0919XX). SEE PROCEDURE "B" FOR 1998 MODELS BUILT BETWEEN SEPT 19, 1997 AND NOV. 1, 1997 (MDH 0919XX & 1101XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The power steering belt may track incorrectly and cause irregular wear or noise. This condition can be caused by mis-alignment of the power steering pump pulley.
DIAGNOSIS:
Non A/C Equipped
Visually inspect the alignment of the power steering pump pulley to the crankshaft pulley. If poor alignment is not clearly visible, use a straightedge to check alignment (Figure 1). The power steering pump pulley should be close to parallel with the crank pulley.
A/C Equipped
Inspect the alignment of the power steering pump pulley by looking at how the belt rides on the idler pulley. If the belt is riding over the edge of the idler, the power steering pulley is out of alignment (Figure 2).
If a mis-alignment is detected, perform the Repair Procedure.
NOTE:
SEE PROCEDURE "A" FOR VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO SEPT. 19, 1997 OR SEE PROCEDURE "B" FOR VEHICLES BUILT BETWEEN SEPT. 19, 1997 AND NOV. 1, 1997.
