Parking Brake System: Adjustments

These brakes are equipped with self adjusting mechanisms, therefore periodic adjustments are not necessary. If stopping power is insufficient, or if brake pedal travel is excessive, brakes should be cleaned and inspected, and the self-adjusting mechanisms should be inspected.

After performing brake service, adjust parking brake as follows:
1. Apply parking brake lever with a force of approximately 45 lbs. while counting number of clicks. Lever should click five to seven times.
2. If not within specifications, release parking brake lever and remove center console, if equipped.
3. Loosen adjusting nut on parking brake lever to free parking brake cables, then depress brake pedal several times to ensure shoe to drum clearance is properly maintained by self-adjusters.
4. Tighten adjusting nut until brake lever can be raised five to seven notches with a force of approximately 45 lbs. If adjusting nut is tightened excessively, self-adjuster mechanism will be inoperative.
5. After adjustment, raise rear of vehicle, ensuring brakes do not drag with parking brake lever released.
