Backglass - Scuffing Noise/Damaged

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO ALL VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO APRIL 10, 1996 (MDH 04-1O-XX).

DISCUSSION:

If a scuffing noise is heard or damage has occurred to the backglass, the following areas should be inspected and corrected as needed:

^ Top 2 inches of balance link should be wrapped in foam.

^ Tacking strip bushings installed.

^ Downstop jam nut adjustment.

After inspection proceed to the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

AR NPN 1/8" Thick x 2" Wide x 2" Long Foam Tape
AR 4724359 Bushing, Tacking Strip

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves wrapping the two balance links at the top end in foam tape, adjusting the jam nut, and installing tacking strip bushings.

1. Remove the screws and push pin fasteners, pull the head liner back to gain access to the balance link.

2. Cut the foam tape to 2" in length. The foam tape should be wrapped on the top edge of the balance link.





3. Using one 2" strip of foam tape, start to wrap the foam tape 1/2 inch from the center of the bolt hole. See illustration.

4. Wrap both ends of the foam tape with duct tape.

5. Perform steps 3 and 4 for the other balance link.

TACKING STRIP BUSHING INSTALLATION:

1. Remove the vinyl curtain to allow access to the 5 tacking strip assemblies.

2. Starting at one end, loosen the tacking strip.

3. Install the plastic bushing (4724359) over the bolt and center the tacking strip hole around the outer diameter (as shown in illustration).

4. Install the nut and torque to 150 in.lbs.

5. Repeat steps 2 thru 4, until all required tacking strip bushings are installed.

6. Place vinyl curtain back into position.

7. Pull head liner back into place and install the set screws.

DOWNSTOP JAM NUT ADJUSTMENT:

1. With the top down, the jam nut is located in the rear pivot area near the balance link. See illustration.

2. Back the jam nut out 1 full turn.

3. Insure proper boot installation. If the boot is difficult to install, turn the jam nut in 1/4 turn.
