SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The convertible top backglass replacement parts now come with the tacking strips attached. This new repair procedure makes it possible to replace the backglass in the service department.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves the removal and installation of the convertible top backglass.
NOTE:
IF THE BACKGLASS REPLACEMENT IS THE RESULT OF A BROKEN BACKGLASS, TO PREVENT INJURY, TAPE THE ENTIRE AREA OF THE REMAINING GLASS (WITH 2 INCH WIDE MASKING TAPE) AND VACUUM ALL BROKEN GLASS OUT OF THE TOP STORAGE AREA AND BACK SEAT
REMOVAL:
1. Release the folding top latches and allow the top cover to relax.
2. Lift the curtain and remove push nuts holding curtain to the studs and discard.
CAUTION:
TAKE PRECAUTIONS NOT TO TEAR CURTAIN IN THE BOOT SHELF DURING REMOVAL.
3. Disengage the headliner at the rear sail panels.
4. Disengage wire connectors from the terminals on the heated backglass.
5. Pull the wire harness from the sleeves at each side of the backglass.
6. Remove the nuts holding the beltline tack strips to the vehicle.
CAUTION:
UNLATCH THE TOP ASSEMBLY AND SUPPORT THE TOP 12" ABOVE THE WINDSHIELD HEADER.
7. Remove the 5 piece beltline tack strips and save the plastic centering bushings for reinstallation. Figure 1.
CAUTION:
NOTE THE LOCATION OF THE PLASTIC CENTERING BUSHINGS FOR INSTALLATION.
8. Remove the antenna mast.
9. Disengage elastic strap from the third roof bow, if equipped.
CAUTION:
PLACE PROTECTIVE PADDING OVER THE ENTIRE REAR DECK AREA TO PROTECT THE PAINT.
10. Move the tack strips to the top of the deck opening onto the protective padding.
11. Mark the outer sail panels along the top edges and down the seams between the outer and second tack strips from the outside of the top. Figure 2.
NOTE:
REFERENCE MARKS WILL BE USED TO INSTALL THE NEW BACKGLASS ASSEMBLY.
12. Remove the sail panel springs on both sides at the front corners of the cover assembly. Figure 3.
13. Remove all staples from the cover assembly.
CAUTION:
BE CAREFUL NOT TO TEAR OR DAMAGE THE COVER ASSEMBLY.
14. Fold the cover assembly up over the top.
15. Remove the tape and foam padding on both sides of the third roof bow, save if reusable.
16. Remove the rearmost stop screw on the number three bow from either the driver's or passenger 5 side.
17. Slide the old backglass assembly off the number three bow.
INSTALLATION:
1. Inspect the flange on the water trough at the weld points, if the metal flange is bent, use a rubber mallet to flatten the flange up against the trough. Figure 4.
NOTE:
TO SUPPORT THE NEW BACKGLASS ASSEMBLY FOR STAPLING PURPOSES, REMOVE THE NEW BACKGLASS FROM THE SHIPPING BOX AND PLACE THE SHIPPING BOX ACROSS THE TOP OPENING, RESTING ON THE BACKSEAT AND DECKLID.
2. Remove the boot shelf and the two sail springs from the old backglass assembly and install onto the new backglass assembly.
3. Place the backglass locking strip on the third bow.
4. Starting from the right side, insert the locking strip into the channel of the number three roof bow. A rubber mallet may be required to set the locking strip into the channel. Figure 5.
CAUTION:
DO NOT SLIDE OR PULL THE LOCKING STRIP ONTO THE NUMBER THREE BOW. TO INSURE BACKGLASS IS SNAPPED INTO THE NUMBER THREE BOW, FLIP THE ASSEMBLY ONTO THE TOP TO INSPECT THE SNAP IN FEATURE. THE LOCKING STRIP SHOULD BE FLAT WITH NO BOWS OR OPEN AREAS.
5. Install the existing or new foam on the ends of the number three bows using 1" black tape to secure the foam to the bow.
6. Install the rearmost stop screw on the number three bow.
7. Starting from the right side of the vehicle, locate the front edge of the cover assembly to the tacking strip (use the measurements from removal step # 11) and pull the cover down until the marking is 1/8 in. below the top edge of the tacking strips.
NOTE:
1/8 in. MEASUREMENT SHOULD BE CONSTANT WHEN STAPLING THE COVER ASSEMBLY TO PREVENT WRINKLES.
8. Continue to staple the right hand cover assembly to tacking strips. Work from the outboard to center line of the vehicle.
9. Repeat step # 7 for the left side of the vehicle.
10. Install the sail panel springs to the front of the cover assembly.
11. Install antenna mast.
12. Engage the backglass elastic strap to the number three roof bow.
13. Install the plastic centering bushings to the beltline tack strips.
14. Using the nuts, install the beltline tacking strips to the rear of the vehicle, starting with the center tack strips and working outboard.
15. Feed the heated rear window wire harness thru sleeves at each side of the backglass.
16. Engage the heated rear window wire connectors to the terminals.
17. Install the headliner at the rear sail panel.
18. Install the curtain with the push on nuts.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THE TIP WELL IS NOT TRAPPED UNDER THE TACK STRIPS.
19. Latch the top and correct any wrinkles found.
