THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 23-67-96, DATED NOVEMBER 22, 1996 WHICH SHOULD BE NOTED IN THE 1996 TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN MANUAL (P/N 81-699-97010). THE REPAIR INFORMATION HAS BEEN REVISED. ALL CHANGES ARE MARKED WITH **ASTERISKS**
MODELS:
1996 - 1997 (JX) Sebring Convertible
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A squeak from the mid section of the body may be noticeable over rough road surfaces or over bumps.
DIAGNOSIS:
Position the vehicle on a suitable hoist. Inspect the four bolts shown in Figure 1. The bolts are located on the underside body panel, just forward of the rear wheel well on both sides.
Measure the torque of each bolt. If the head of either bolt is not flush with the panel or the bolt torque is below 18 Nm (160 in. lbs.), perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
4 06101671 Bolt, Self Tapping M10x1.5x45 mm
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves correcting the torque of the underbody sheet metal bolts and replacing as needed.
**NOTE:
WHEN POSITIONING VEHICLE ON THE HOIST INSURE TRAILING ARM BRACKET IS CLEAR FOR REMOVAL.**
1. Lift vehicle on a suitable hoist.
2. Inspect the two bolts, insure they are installed with their heads flush to the sheet metal. If the bolt heads are flush, torque to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).
**3. To gain access to the rear bolts, remove the 4 bolts attaching the trailing link hanger bracket to the floor pan and frame rail and position out of the way. **
**NOTE:
DO NOT REMOVE THE TRAILING LINK FROM THE BRACKET.**
4. If the bolt heads are not flush to the sheet metal, remove the existing bolts one at a time. ** Enlarge the existing hole by drilling with a 90 degree drill and a maximum 8.7 mm (11/32") drill bit and install the new bolt (P/N 06101671). Caution should be used to insure the bolt is installed flush to the sheet metal.** Do not tap the hole first, the new bolts are self tapping. Torque bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.).
CAUTION:
THE NEW BOLTS MUST BE INSTALLED SO THAT THE BOLT HEAD IS FLUSH WITH THE SHEET METAL.
**5. Install the trailing link hanger bracket on the vehicle and loosely install the 4 attaching bolts. Then install 2 drift pins of appropriate size in the positioning holes of the bracket (between each set of bolt holes) and into the locating holes in the body. **
**6. With the hanger bracket correctly positioned on the vehicle, torque the 4 hanger bracket mounting bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).**
7. Repeat the procedure for the other side of vehicle.
