Steering Column Removal and Installation

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then place front wheels in straight ahead position.
2. Remove fuse panel cover from left end of instrument panel, then remove instrument panel cover mounting screw from behind fuse panel.
3. Remove center bezel from top cover of instrument panel, then remove top cover of instrument panel.
4. Remove knee bolster.
5. Remove two air bag module Torx head mounting bolts from steering wheel, then remove air bag.
6. Disconnect clockspring electrical connection from air bag module.
7. Remove speed control switches from steering wheel, then disconnect clockspring and horn ground wire.
8. Remove steering wheel retaining nut from steering column shaft, then remove steering wheel using puller tool No. CJ2001P, or equivalent.
9. Remove upper shroud from steering column then tilt column to its highest position and remove lower shroud.

10. Remove wiring harness connectors from clockspring, halo light and ignition switch.
11. On models equipped with automatic transmission, place key cylinder in Off position, then remove shifter/ignition interlock cable from key lock housing.
12. On all models, remove pinch bolt from steering coupler, then separate steering coupler from steering gear.
13. Ensure steering column tilt lever is in locked position, then insert a 7/32 drill bit in each locking pin hole on upper steering column bracket.
14. Remove upper steering column support bracket mounting nuts, then remove lower steering column support bracket mounting nuts.
15. Remove steering column assembly.
16. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Depress two clockspring locking pins to disengage clockspring locking mechanism.
b. With clockspring locking mechanism disengaged, rotate clockspring rotor fully clockwise until does not turn. Do not apply excessive torque.
c. Rotate clockspring rotor counterclockwise until yellow appears in clockspring centering window.
d. Engage clockspring locking mechanism.
