Ticking Noise in Engine Compartment

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 18-01-96, DATED JAN. 19, 1996, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. 1995 2.0L VEHICLES HAVE BEEN DELETED AND 1996 MODELS HAVE BEEN ADDED AND ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS**.

MODELS:
1995 - **1996** (FJ) Avenger/Sebring/Talon

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO 1995 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.5L ENGINE AND **1996 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.5L ENGINE BUILT PRIOR TO MARCH 14, 1996 MDH (03-14-XX)* AND **1996 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.0L DOHC (NON TURBO) ENGINE BUILT PRIOR TO MARCH 14, 1996 MDH (03-14-XX)*

NOTE:
REFER TO TSB 18-02-96 AND 18-10-96 FOR 1995 2.0L DOHC (NON TURBO) APPLICATIONS.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

1. Ticking noise (at idle) from engine compartment. Condition is most noticeable in cold ambient temperatures (below 40°F).

DIAGNOSIS:

Start vehicle and warm engine. Verify ticking noise in right front corner of engine compartment with engine at idle. Use the DRB III to selectively turn the duty cycle purge solenoid off. Select engine diagnostics!system test/purge vapor test/block. If the noise disappears, proceed with the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 4874833 Duty Cycle Purge Solenoid

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the duty cycle purge solenoid with a quieter solenoid assembly

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the right front wheel and splash shield to gain access to the duty cycle purge solenoid.

2. Remove the purge solenoid from its bracket and install new solenoid P/N 4874833.

NOTE:
BE SURE TO CONNECT THE PURGE HOSES PROPERLY TO THE NEW SOLENOID.

3. Install the splash shield and wheel.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
