NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO ALL VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO SEPTEMBER, 13, 1996 (MDH 09-13-XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) with variable Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). The MIL may be steady on or will only illuminate when vehicle is driven over a bump or similar jostling of the vehicle.
DIAGNOSIS:
Inspect the headlamp and dash harness section connected to the forward connector of the SBEC (pins 41-80) for fraying after rubbing against the screw head. The screw connects the EATX bracket to the left headlamp mount by way of a brace. See Illustration.
Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Diagnostic Scan Tool (DRB III) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures Manual, verify all engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are present and no frayed wires are found, record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin. Perform the Repair Procedure, the harness section should be reinforced on all vehicles regardless of frayed wires.
PARTS REQUIRED:
1 06035225 Screw (Pan Head), EATX Bracket to Left Headlamp
AR 04364393 Tube, Convolute
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves the repair of the open wire(s) and replacing the screw holding the EATX bracket to left headlamp brace, with a screw that has a rounded head.
1. Locate the frayed wire(s) and separate from the bundle. If no frayed wires, proceed to step 7.
2. Cut and strip the insulation off of the wire(s) from the wire harness to allow room for repair.
3. Slide a piece of heat shrink tubing onto the wire.
4. Solder twisted wire ends using rosin core solder.
5. Slide down the piece of heat shrink tubing to cover wire repair. Be careful to center each wire repair inside the tubing. Heat the tubing to shrink and seal the wire repair. Use the approved air heat gun only.
6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 for all damaged wires.
7. Install the convolute tube in area where wire bundle routes by screw. Completely wrap both ends with tape to prevent movement.
8. Remove the screw holding the EATX bracket to the left Headlamp mount brace and discard.
9. Install the new screw (P/N 06035225) and torque to 85 In.Lbs.
