Balance Shaft: Service and Repair
1. Remove timing belt front cover as outlined under "Front Cover, Replace".
Exploded View Of Cylinder Block, Balance Shafts, Crankshaft, Piston & Connecting Rod Assembly.:
2. Remove gear cover double ended retaining stud, gear and chain covers and gears.
3. Remove balance shaft gear and chain sprocket retaining bolts and crankshaft chain sprocket. To remove chain and sprocket assembly, use two pry bars to work sprocket back and forth.
4. Remove carrier rear cover and balance shafts.
5. Remove four carrier to crankcase attaching bolts to separate carrier.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
Balance Shaft Gear Alignment.:
a. Dot marks on balance shaft gears must be aligned and balance shaft keys must face upward.

b. Balance shaft timing chain and gear timing marks must be aligned as shown.
Balance Shaft Timing Chain Tension Adjustment.:
c. When adjusting balance shaft timing chain tension, position a shim 0.039 inch thick by 2.75 inches long between tensioner and chain. Push tensioner and shim against timing chain with a force of 5.5-6.6 lbs. With force applied to timing chain, tighten top tensioner bolt, then bottom tensioner bolt to specifications.
