Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under "Precautions".
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Remove air cleaner and disconnect all vacuum lines, electrical harnesses and fuel lines from throttle body.
4. Remove throttle linkage.
5. Remove accessory drive belts.
6. Remove intake manifold power brake vacuum connection.
7. Raise and support vehicle, then remove exhaust pipe from manifold.
8. Remove and set aside power steering pump assembly.
9. Disconnect coil pack electrical connector and remove coil pack and bracket.
10. Remove cam sensor and fuel injector electrical connectors.
11. Remove timing belt and camshaft sprocket.
12. Remove cylinder head cover.
13. Remove rocker arm shaft assemblies.
14. Remove cylinder head bolts.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply oil to bolts before installing.

Without Multi Layer Steel Head Gasket
b. Install four short bolts in positions 7, 8, 9 and 10.
c. Using sequence as shown, torque cylinder head bolts to 25 ft-lbs, then again in sequence to 50 ft-lbs. Loosen bolts and tighten again in sequence to 50 ft-lbs, then tighten bolts an additional 1/4 turn without using a torque wrench.
With Multi Layer Steel Head Gasket
Note: The four short bolts are placed in the corners.
Step 1
Torque all center bolts to 34 Nm (25 Ft Lbs), Torque the 4 corner bolt to 27 Nm (20 Ft Lbs)
Step 2
Torque all center bolts to 68 Nm (50 Ft Lbs), Torque the four corner bolts to 47 Nm (35 Ft Lbs),
Step 3
Re-torque all center bolts to 68 Nm (50 Ft Lbs), Re-torque the 4 corner bolts to 47 Nm (35 Ft Lbs).
Step 4
Tighten all bolts in the Specified sequence an additional 90° (1/4 turn).
