Wiper Arms - Contact A Post And/Or Cowl

MODELS:

1996 - 1997 (JX) Sebring Convertible

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The wiper arms contact the A-post or cowl and/or park (stop) too high or too low.

DIAGNOSIS:

Inspect the A-post and cowl for signs of contact (scratched or rub marks). Wet the windshield and then cycle the wipers into the parked position. Measure from the tip of the wiper blade to the top of the cowl screen. The drivers side should be 1-1/2" (40 mm) and the passenger side should be 2" (50 mm). If there are signs of contact or the wiper arm is not within the specifications above, proceed to the repair procedure.

AR 04882618 Wiper Arm (Right Side)

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves the installation and modification of a new wiper arm(s) as determined in the Diagnostic Procedure.

NOTE:
THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE BEAUTY CAP'S AND WIPER ARM'S ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. IF REPLACING BOTH ARMS, MARK THE POSITIONS THE COMPONENTS FOR LATER IDENTIFICATION.

1. Insure that the arms are in the park position.

2. With the vehicle on a flat surface, raise the hood.

3. Remove the beauty cap(s) by lifting up and pulling.

4. Remove the wiper arm(s) nut from the wiper arm(s) and close hood.

5. Put the wiper arm(s) in the service position (straight up in the air) and pull up while lightly rocking back and forth from front to rear of the vehicle, to remove the arm.

6. Remove from the wiper arm(s).

7. The new wiper arm(s) must have the locking tab removed before installing the arm(s) on the vehicle.





A. Clamp the locking pliers onto the wiper arm locking tab. (See Figure 1)





B. Work the locking pliers back and forth until the tab breaks away. (See Figure 2)

C. File the rough edges to insure a smooth surface.

D. Repeat for the other side if required.

7. Install the wiper blade(s) on the wiper arm(s), by referring to the reference marks.

8. Install the driver side wiper arm/blade assembly onto the pivot shaft. The tip of the blade should be 1-1/2" (40 mm) from the top of the cowl screen.





9. Install the passenger side wiper arm/blade assembly onto the pivot shaft. The tip of the blade should be 2" (50 mm) from the top of the cowl screen. Figure 3

10. Torque the washer arm nut(s) to 25-30 ft.lbs (35-40 Nm).

11. Wet the glass using the windshield wiper system.

12. Actuate the windshield wipers and watch the wiper arm/blade assemblies to insure proper operation. If the wiper arms appear to be slipping on the pivot shaft, retorque the wiper arm nut.

13. Raise the hood.

14. Install the beauty cap(s) and close hood.
