Door Sill Area - Squeak Noise On Rough Roads

Squeak In Door Sill Area

MODELS:

1996 - 1997 (JX) Sebring Convertible

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A squeak coming from the door sill area.

DIAGNOSIS:

Drive the vehicle over speed bumps or rough roads attempting to create body flexing, listen for a squeak coming from the lower door sill area. If a squeak is heard from either side, perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

2 06504772 Screw, 8 mm - M8x1 .25x35 mm Self Tapping

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves the addition of a screw to the cowl side sheet metal and into the reinforcement tube.

1. Remove the door sill trim panel by gently prying up with a fork type prying tool. Start at one end and work to the other.





2. Remove the screws holding the cowl trim panel to the inner cowl panel and set aside the cowl trim panel. Figure 1

3. Remove the floor mat and pull back the carpet to allow access to the inner cowl panel and floor pan.

4. Disengage wiring harness from sheet metal for access.

5. Pull back sound deadner mat.





6. Measure 3-3/4 inches (95 mm) forward of the first bolt in the sill from the A-pillar. Now measure from the floor pan up 3/4 inch (20 mm) on the cowl side sheet metal. Make a mark where the two points cross. Figure 2

7. Remove foam sealant at location for drilling.

8. Drill a 9/32 (7 mm) hole thru the cowl side sheet metal into the reinforcement tube.

9. Coat the self tapping screw with RTV sealant (P/N 82300234).

10. Install the 8 mm (P/N 06504772) self tapping screw and a 24 mm (1 inch) washer. Do not tap the hole before installing the screw.

NOTE:
ENSURE THAT THE SCREW AND WASHER ARE SQUARE TO THE SHEET METAL BEFORE TORQUING.

11. Torque the screw to 24 Nm (210 in lbs.).

12. Vacuum up all shavings from drilling procedure.

13. Place sound deadner, wiring harness and carpet back into original position.

14. Install cowl side panel trim.

15. Install door sill trim panel.

16. Repeat procedure for other side if needed.
