Some 1995 or 1996 models built before March 15, 1996 (MDH 03-15-XX) may have the pivot shaft, which connects the cup holder lid to the cup holder, shift out of position allowing the lid to come apart from the holder.

DIAGNOSIS:

Visually inspect the cupholder for damage and inspect for proper operation.

PARTS REQUIRED:

As Needed for Repair

1 MR33O436 Cup Holder Lid
1 MR33O437 Cup Holder Lid (Wood Grain)
1 MR33O438 Cup Holder
1 MR33O434 Cup Holder Shaft (Requires Crimping Before
Installation)
1 MR33O435 Cup Holder Spring

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves disassembling the cupholder assembly and crimping the metal pivot shaft to prevent shifting or replacing damaged components.

1. Verify the condition by inspecting the cup holder for proper operation.

2. Disassemble the cup holder from the console. Take care not to break any of the plastic pivot pins on the holder or lid.

3. Inspect the parts for damage. If any are broken, the pivot rod is missing or bent, or the spring is missing, refer to the parts required section for part replacement information.

4. Disassemble the lid from the holder by removing the pivot shaft. Take care not to lose the spring.

5. Using a vise, crimp approximately 2 - 3 mm (5/64 - 7/64 inch) of one end of the pivot shaft.

NOTE:
DO NOT CRIMP ANY MORE OF THE SHAFT THAN SPECIFIED. IMPROPER OPERATION COULD OCCUR.

6. Reassemble the lid and holder along with the pivot rod and spring as follows:

A. Slide the pivot shaft into the lid hole (non crimped end first).

B. Slide the pivot shaft through the first set of holder holes.

C. Slide the pivot shaft through the second set of holder holes and through the spring. Make sure the spring is positioned correctly for proper tension on the holder.

D. Press the crimped end of the shaft into the lid hole. Make sure the shaft will not slide out.

7. Reassemble the cup holder assembly into the console. Take care not to break any plastic pivots during reassembly.

8. Check cupholder for proper operation.
