Steering Gear Cold "Squawk" Noise

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 19-03-97 DATED FEB. 14, 1997 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDE A CORRECTION TO A LABOR OPERATION NUMBER.

MODELS:

1993 - 1996 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision/LHS/New Yorker

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

"Squawk" noise from right steering gear isolator in cold weather (less than 20 degrees F.).

DIAGNOSIS:

Park vehicle for at least 4 hours at temperatures less than 20 degrees F. Start vehicle and turn steering wheel without moving vehicle. Listen for "squawk" noise from inside vehicle. If noise can be heard coming from the cowl area and can be isolated to the right side of the engine compartment, perform Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

(AR)1 04897706AA Isolator, Steering Gear Right Side, 1993-1995 MY.
(AR)1 04755114 Gear Steering, Standard, 1996 MY.
(AR)1 04886212AA Gear Steering, Speed Proportional, 1996 M.Y.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the steering gear isolator on 1993-95 models and the steering gear on 1996 models.

ISOLATOR REPLACEMENT, 1993-1995 M. Y.

1. If vehicle is equipped with a 3.5L engine, disconnect the air plenum from throttle bodies, PCV make up air tube and idle air control motor. Remove air plenum from vehicle.

2. Remove the 2 right side bolts attaching the steering gear assembly to the cross member.

3. Remove upper half of clamp.

4. Replace right side isolator with p/n 04897706AA.

5. Install upper half of clamp.

6. Install 2 bolts attaching the steering gear assembly to the cross member, tighten to 61 Nm (45 ft.lbs.).

7. Install air plenum, if equipped.

STEERING GEAR REPLACEMENT, 1996 M.Y.

Replace the steering gear as described on page 19-22 of the 1996 Concorde/Intrepid/Vision/LHS/New Yorker Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-6140).

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
