Steering Column Removal and Installation
Fig.7 Exploded View Of Steering Column Assembly:
1. Turn steering wheel 1/2 turn from straight ahead position, then remove key from lock cylinder.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. On models equipped with speed control, remove speed control switches from steering wheel.
4. On models less speed control, remove steering wheel side covers.
5. On all models, remove air bag module mounting bolts, then slightly lift module. Disconnect module electrical connectors and remove module from steering wheel.
6. Remove steering wheel retaining nut, then the steering wheel using puller tool No. C-3428-B, or equivalent. Do not bump or hammer on steering column shaft to remove wheel.
7. Remove instrument panel end covers, then air bag fuse Nos. 7 and 19 from fuse panel.
8. Remove cowl trim panels, then the console or instrument panel lower center cover and ashtray.
9. Remove left under instrument panel silencer/duct, then the lower dash panel assembly.
10. Remove under steering column air outlet duct, then tilt steering column to full down position.
11. Remove tilt lever and steering column shrouds.
12. On models equipped with column shift lever, remove shift cable as follows:
a. Install tilt lever, then tilt steering column to full up position.
b. Pry shift cable off shifter pin, then remove shift cable retaining clip at shift cable support bracket. Do not bend cable bracket.
c. Remove tilt lever.
13. On all models, turn ignition key to Run position, unlocking steering column. Depress tab and remove floor shift interlock cable from steering column socket.
14. Remove retaining pin, from lower steering column coupler bolt. Remove coupler bolt and separate coupler from intermediate shaft.
15. Loosen two bolts retaining lower steering column assembly bracket to mount bracket.
16. While supporting weight of steering column, remove two nuts retaining upper steering column mounting bracket.
17. Remove steering column assembly from its mounting bracket and lay it on floor of vehicle.
18. Disconnect turn signal/multi-function switch and ignition switch wiring harness connectors.
19. Disconnect halo light and clockspring wiring harness connectors. Depress tab to remove steering column wiring trough from its mounting bracket.
20. Remove steering column from vehicle.
21. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure ground clip is installed on left capsule slot.
b. Ensure both breakaway capsules are fully seated in slots of steering column upper support bracket. Torque bolts to 8 ft. lbs.
c. On models equipped with column shift, a new interlock cassette must be installed.
d. On all models, torque steering wheel nut to 45 ft. lbs.
