Fig. 66 Disconnecting Quick-Connect Fittings:
NOTE: While this procedure specifies disconnecting and connect fuel tube/quick-connect fittings from the fuel rail it applies to the same operations for the fuel filter outlet. Special tool 6751 is specified for the fuel rail connections due to limited access. Special tool 6751 is not specified for the fuel filter although it can be used.
WARNING: Release fuel system pressure before disconnecting a quick-connect fittings. Refer to the fuel pressure release procedure.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative cable from the battery
2. Perform the Fuel Pressure Release Procedure.
3. Remove any loose dirt from quick connect fittings.
WARNING: Wrap shop towels around hoses to catch any gasoline spillage.
4. At the fuel rail, push the quick connect fitting toward the fuel tube while depressing the built-in disconnect tool with special tool 6751. To disconnect fitting from fuel rail, slightly twist the fitting and while maintaining downward pressure on special tool 6751 (Fig. 66).
5. Cover the fitting to prevent contamination.
INSTALLATION
1. Ensure the black plastic release ring is in the OUT position.
- If the locking retainer is stuck in the RELEASE position due to mushrooming of the disconnect tool or dirt accumulation replace the fitting and tube assembly.
2. Lubricate the fuel tube nipple with clean 30 weight engine oil.
3. Start the quick-connect fitting on the fuel rail nipple by hand.
Fig. 67 Connecting Quick-Connect Fitting to Fuel Rail End:
4. Place special tool 6751 below the largest diameter of the quick-connect fitting (Fig. 67).
5. Pull special tool 6751 toward fuel tube nipple until quick-connect fitting clicks into place. When quick-connect fitting clicks into place. the retainer holds the fuel nipple shoulder in place and the O-ring seal the tube.
Fig. 68 Inspecting Quick-Connect Fitting Connecting:
6. Place special tool 6751 between shoulder of the disconnect tool and the top of the quick-connect body (Fig. 68).
7. Inspect connection by pushing down on special tool 6751.
- When inspecting the connection, a slight downward movement of the quick-connect fitting occurs until the retainer in the fitting contact the fuel tube nipple shoulder.
- Once the retainer contact the shoulder all movement should stop.
- If the quick-connect fitting comes off of the fuel rail, attach it according to the INSTALLATION procedure.
- Ensure the black plastic disconnect tool is not causing the retainer fingers to jam in the release position.
CAUTION: When using the ASD Fuel System Test, the ASD relay and fuel pump relay remain energized for 7 minutes or until the test is stopped, or until the ignition switch is turned to the Off position.
8. Use the DRB scan tool ASD Fuel System Test to pressurize the fuel system. Check for leaks.
