Repair Procedure
This repair involves installing two radio speaker overlay harnesses.NOTE:
THIS REPAIR WILL REDUCE THE NOISE/WHINE HEARD FROM THE SPEAKERS BUT WILL NOT ELIMINATE IT.
1. Record the radio preset stations. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the upper instrument panel as described on page E-15 of the 1996 Concorde/Intrepid/Vision/New Yorker/LHS Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-6140).
3. Remove left and right instrument panel speakers.
4. Route the instrument panel overlay harness along the main harness on back of instrument panel.
5. Locate the original grey 7-way radio connector (C227) and remove the following 3 wires and install them in the same cavities in the new overlay gray 7-way connector:
6. Tape back or cut the original radio connector to prevent rattling.
7. Connect all 3 instrument panel speakers to the overlay harness. Tape back or cut the original speaker connectors to prevent them from rattling.
8. Locate the light blue 12-way junction block connector (C202). Remove the following 7 wires and install them in the same cavities in the new overlay light blue 12-way connector:
9. Tape back or cut the original junction block connector to prevent raffling. Plug the overlay connector to the junction block.
10. Locate the ground ring terminal on the overlay harness. This is the ground for the helical shield within the overlay harness. Attach this ring terminal underneath the screw for the park lamp relay mounted on the left end instrument panel bracket that secures the junction block.
11. Locate the white 18-way in-line connector (C242) on the right side of the instrument panel. Remove the following 4 wires from the instrument panel harness side and install them in the same cavities in the new overlay white 18-way connector:
12. Tape back or cut the original harness in line connector to prevent rattling.
13. Spot tape or tie strap the instrument panel overlay harness to the main harness approximately every 6 inches to prevent raffling.
14. Install upper instrument panel only (leave lower instrument panel disassembled).
15. Remove upper and lower quarter trim panels.
16. Remove the rear seat.
17. Remove the rear shelf panel.
18. Remove the left and right rear speakers.
19. Remove the right front and right rear door sill covers.
20. Remove the passenger front seat belt bolt at the floor.
21. Pull out the carpet from around the amplifier in the trunk.
22. Remove the ground screw located by the amplifier (8 mm) for ease of overlay harness installation.
23. Install the body overlay harness over the existing harness and spot tape or tie strap as needed. Make sure the harness will not get trapped or pinched upon reassembly.
24. Transfer X60 DG1RD from cavity 9 in the existing 18-way white body harness connector (C242) to the same cavity in the new body overlay white 18-way connector.
25. Connect the white 18-way (female) connector on the body overlay harness to the white 18-way (male) connector on the instrument panel overlay harness. Mount the connector with the clip provided. Tape back or cut the original body harness in-line connector (C242) to prevent rattling.
26. Remove the connectors from the amplifier in the trunk. Remove the following 3 wires from the original grey 12-way connector (C373) and install them in the same cavities in the new overlay grey 12-way connector:
27. Transfer X60 DGIRD from cavity 14 in the 18-way grey existing body harness to amplifier connector (C372) to same cavity in new overlay harness grey 18-way connector.
28. Connect the 2 amplifier connectors from the overlay harness to the amplifier. Tape back or cut the original harness amplifier connectors to prevent rattling.
29. Reconnect the harness ground by the amplifier.
30. Reconnect the 2 rear shelf speakers.
31. Verify that the overlay harnesses will not get trapped, cut or pinched during reassembly of the vehicle. Re-assemble vehicle.
32. Connect the negative battery cable and reset the clock and previously recorded radio stations.
