A/C Performance/Compressor Failure
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 24-07-96, DATED MAY 24, 1996, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THE PART NUMBERS HAVE BEEN CORRECTED AND HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS**.
MODELS:
1995 - 1996 (JA) Cirrus/Stratus
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.5L ENGINE.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A/C performance complaints and/or A/C compressor failure (seized) in high ambient temperatures (90°+ F.). This condition is aggravated by start and stop city driving and/or extended periods of idling with the A/C running (air from the cooling fans may circulate through condenser and back around the gaps between the radiator and radiator closure panel).
NOTE:
ALL VEHICLES EXPOSED TO THESE CONDITIONS SHOULD HAVE THIS REPAIR PERFORMED.
DIAGNOSIS:
If vehicle is operated in high ambient temperatures and system is operating normally in non-extreme conditions or A/C compressor has failed (seized) perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
1 **4883308** Air Seal, Radiator to Closure Panel, Right Side
1 **4883309** Air Seal, Radiator to Closure Panel, Left Side
5 6502625 Screw and Retainer, Fascia to Lower Cross Member
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves installing air seals between the radiator and radiator closure panel.
1. Release hood latch and open hood.
2. Remove attaching screws and remove headlamp assemblies.
3. Remove push-in fasteners holding top of fascia and/or grille assembly to radiator closure panel crossmember.
4. Hoist and support vehicle on safety stands.
5. Remove push-in screw and retainers holding fascia to bottom of lower crossmember and bottom of splash shields.
6. Using a trim stick, pry wheelhouse edges from behind fascia forward of front wheels.
7. Remove screws holding fascia to bottom of fenders rearward of the parking lamps.
8. Slide fascia forward to disengage hooks holding fascia to bottom of fenders.
9. Separate fascia from vehicle.
10. Disengage fog lamp wire connectors from back of fog lamps, if equipped.
11. Remove upper radiator crossmember and set on top of engine. It is not necessary to remove hood release cable from crossmember.
12. Remove (4) A/C condenser to radiator attaching screws.
13. Loosen A/C condenser tube attaching bracket on right side edge of radiator.
14. Slide air seals between radiator and condenser, position over condenser mounting brackets as indicated.
15. Install and tighten (4) A/C condenser to radiator attaching screws.
16. Tighten A/C condenser tube attaching bracket on right side of radiator.
17. Install fascia, headlamps, and upper radiator crossmember. Use new fascia to lower crossmember attaching screws, P/N 6502625.
