Deck Lid Remote Release - Does Not Open Trunk

SUBJECT: Deck Lid Remote Release/Valet Lockout Service

MODELS: 1995 - 1996 (JA) Breeze/Cirrus/Stratus

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

1. Pulling deck lid remote release handle does not open trunk, or handle stays in the up/open position.
2. Release handle points down toward floor.
3. Valet lockout feature intermittently engages automatically, or still opens the deck lid with the lockout lever in the down (lock) position.

DIAGNOSIS:

NOTE:
Make certain owner understands function of valet lockout feature.

1. Check if the cable is straight, moves freely, and is connected at both ends. Check for sealer runout at the handle assembly. Check handle assembly for interference to carpet. Check if the striker is aligned to vertical (not rotated from vertical). If any of these conditions exist, perform step # 1 in the Repair Procedure.
2. Pull handle up, release and push handle down gently. If handle does not stay in the horizontal position, perform step # 2 in the Repair Procedure.
3. Check if the cable is straight and moves freely and the release handle functions properly. Check if the striker is aligned to vertical (not rotated from vertical). If any of these conditions exist, perform step # 3 in the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:





This bulletin involves inspecting and repairing the remote deck lid release and valet lockout mechanism.

1. A. Repair or replace bent or disconnected cable. Cable should move freely in the casing when disconnected at both ends.
B. Trim any excess sealer or carpet that interferes with the remote release handle or handle assembly.
C. If the remote release handle is damaged from over pulling, replace with P/N 4814127.
D. If the latch striker is rotated from its vertical position, adjust as necessary.
E. Verify operation.

2. A. If remote release handle will not stay in the horizontal position replace with P/N 4814127. Verify operation.

3. A. Repair or replace bent cable. Cable should move freely in the casing when disconnected at both ends.
B. If remote release handle stays in the up/open position refer to step # 1.
C. If the valet lockout lever in the trunk is very loose (lack of detent) or lever tab is bent replace with P/N 4814385.
D. If vehicle was built before Dec. 25, 1995 (MDH 12-25-XX), replace striker with P/N 4814385.
E. If the latch striker is rotated from its vertical position, adjust as necessary.
F. Verify operation.
