Service Procedure
1. Open the hood.2. Mark the position of the hood latch assembly by drawing a line around the attaching ears (Figure 1).
IMPORTANT:
The current hood latch position must be marked to maintain the hood alignment when the latch is reinstalled.
3. Remove the two (2) latch assembly attaching nuts (Figure 1).
4. Remove the latch assembly from the radiator crossmember by tilting the left (driver) side forward (to clear the mounting stud) and rotating the latch up (above the stud). Then rock the right (passenger) side of the latch forward to clear the stud.
NOTE:
The remote release cable does not need to be disconnected.
5. Using a scratch awl with a hooked end or needle nose pliers, disconnect the small latch spring from the secondary latch (Figure 2).
6. Remove the spring from the primary latch pawl and discard it.
7. Attach the new spring on the pawl with the open end towards the bottom of the latch (Figure 3).
8. Hook the other end of the spring up through the bottom of the secondary latch using the hooked scratch awl (Figure 3).
9. Install the latch assembly onto the mounting studs and hand start the nuts.
10. Align the latch with the marks made in Step 2 and tighten the nuts to 250 in-lbs (28 N.m).
11. Lower the hood until the secondary latch engages and then verify that the striker loop on the hood aligns with the latch opening. Realign the latch assembly if necessary.
12. Raise the hood and then drop it from a height of six (6) inches. Verify that the primary latch is engaged. If the primary latch is not engaged, realign the latch assembly as necessary.
NOTE:
The primary latch must engage when the hood is dropped from a maximum of six (6) inches.
13. Release the primary latch and verify that the secondary latch retains the hood.
