Shift Linkage: Adjustments
Before replacing the gearshift selector or crossover cable for a hard shifting condition, disconnect both cables from the transaxle. Then, from inside of vehicle, manually operate the gearshift lever through all gear ranges. If the gearshift lever moves smoothly, the cable(s) should not be replaced. Selector cable is not adjustable.1. Remove lockpin from transaxle selector shaft housing.
2. Reverse lockpin so long end is down and insert pin into same threaded hole. A hole in selector shaft will align with lockpin, allowing lockpin to be screwed into housing. This locks selector shaft in 3-4 neutral position.
3. Remove gearshift knob and gearshift boot.
4. Remove console, if equipped.
5. Adjust crossover cable and tighten adjusting screw to specifications. Crossover cable adjusting screw must be properly tightened. Ensure crossover bellcrank does not move when tightening adjusting screw.
6. Remove lockpin from selector shaft housing and reinstall lockpin so long end is up in selector shaft housing. Tighten lockpin to specifications.
7. Check for proper operation in first and reverse. Ensure reverse lockout operates properly. Gearshift mechanism and cables are now properly adjusted.
8. Install console, if equipped, gearshift boot and knob.
