GROUP: Vehicle Performance
DATE: Feb. 3,1995

SUBJECT:

Start Up Die Out with no Fault Codes or Transmission Defaults to 2nd Gear with Fault Codes 26 & 42

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 18-04-95, DATED JAN. 20,1995, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THE REVISION CLARIFIES THE TRANS MISSION CONTROL MODULE BUILD DATES AND IS HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS**.

MODELS:
1995 (AA) Spirit/Acclaim/LeBaron Sedan
1995 (AJ) LeBaron Coupe/LeBaron Convertible
1995 (AS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
1995 (ES) Chrysler Voyager (European Market)

NOTE:

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 41TE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE AND A TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) BUILT BETWEEN JULY 29, 1994 AND AUGUST 5, 1994 IDENTIFIED BY THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF THE TCM BAR CODE/SERIAL NUMBER **(2104 THRU 2174)**. REFER TO THE ILLUSTRATION.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Start up die out with no fault codes present or when operating at an engine speed above idle, the transmission goes into 2nd gear default and the following fault codes are set: 26 and 42 (LR/2-4 pressure switch circuit & 2-4 solenoid circuit).

DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Scan Tool (DRB Ill) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedure Manual, verify that all engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are present, record them on the repair order for future reference and repair as necessary.

For vehicles with start up die out and no codes present, disconnect the TCM and start the vehicle. Engage the transmission. If the start up die out does not reoccur, proceed with the repair procedure.

For vehicles with fault codes 26 & 42, and if all other systems are functioning correctly, proceed with the repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 4686606 Module, Transmission Control

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves the replacement of the TCM, setting the pinion factor and performing the quick learn procedure.

1. Using a DRB III, program this Technical Service Bulletin, No. 18-04-95, into the TCM that is currently installed on the vehicle. This is accomplished by choosing the TSB option under Adjustments.

NOTE:
THIS STEP WILL BE ELECTRONICALLY VERIFIED WHEN THE MODULE IS INSPECTED AT THE CHRYSLER RETURN CENTER.

2. Replace the TCM with the new module following the procedures outlined in the appropriate Service Manual.
3. Using the procedure listed in the Service Manual, complete the following:

A. Electronic Pinion Factor Procedure.
B. Quick Learn Procedure (required whenever a transaxle or TCM is replaced).

NOTE:
BEFORE PERFORMING THE QUICK LEARN PROCEDURE, THE GEARSHIFT LEVER MUST BE PLACED INTO THE OVERDRIVE POSITION WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, AND THE TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL MUST BE SET CORRECTLY. THIS PROCEDURE PURGES AIR FROM THE CLUTCH CIRCUITS PREVENTING ERRONEOUS CLUTCH VOLUME VALUES WHICH COULD CAUSE POOR INITIAL SHIFT QUALITY.

NOTE:
THE FOLLOWING STEP IS REQUIRED BY LAW.

4. Type the necessary information on the Authorized Modification Label and attach the label near the VECI Label.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
