DRB-III DIAGNOSTIC READ-OUT BOXThe DRB-III is a diagnostic read-out box designed by Chrysler to gain access to the on-board diagnostics that are found on Chrysler-built cars and trucks.
^ The DRB-III reads the system performance information that is stored in the vehicle system controllers.
^ The DRB-III displays the fault messages that have been stored in the various system controller memories.
^ The DRB-III allows the Technician to run tests of computer controlled vehicle systems.
^ The DRB-III, along with the test procedures in this section, leads the Technician through the diagnostic procedures.
There are diagnostic scan tools available from other manufacturers that can be used on Chrysler vehicles. However, the diagnostic test procedures are designed for use with Chrysler's DRB-III diagnostic read-out box. It is assumed that the DRB-III will be used to perform the procedures.
The DRB-III operates by communicating with the Body Control Module (BCM) for the vehicle system being tested. To communicate with the BCM, the DRB-III must be connected to the CCD Data Link connector. This is located on the left side of the instrument panel behind the fuse access cover.
To perform the diagnostic tests in this section, a program cartridge must be inserted. This cartridge serves a similar purpose for the DRB-III as a diskette does for a personal computer. It contains the diagnostic test program. It must be inserted into the DRB-III in order to perform the tests.
