9217chrysler02

NO. 535

February, 1992

To:
All Chrysler-Plymouth Dealers

Subject:
Customer Satisfaction Notification # 535 -- Trunk Lid Moisture Drain Holes

Models:
1992 Model Year Chrysler New Yorker Salon and Fifth Avenue (AC/AY-Body) Vehicles Built From Job # 1 Through Mid October, 1991

The trunk lid bottom hem flange on listed model vehicles may perforate due to corrosion because of missing drain holes. To prevent corrosion from occurring, a drain hole must be drilled in the lower surface of the trunk lid inner panel on each side.

Important:
Some of the involved vehicles may still be in dealer stock. Be sure to complete the service on these vehicles before retail delivery.

Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.

Note:
No videotape of the service procedure for this recall will be provided.

Vehicle List

Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive with this letter a vehicle list arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

Each Chrysler-Plymouth and Dodge dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by Compak Mail for use in performing the service on any involved transient vehicles.

Parts

No parts are required for this service.

Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to schedule appointments for the service with their dealers at the earliest possible date. A copy of the owner notification letter is included.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Recall Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.

Service Procedure

1. Raise the trunk lid, measure 9-3/4 inches inboard from both the left and right hand edges and mark the trunk lid inner panel as close to the bottom hem flange as possible at both locations (Figure 1).

2. Using a center punch and a hammer, lightly mark both of the drilling locations at the 9-3/4 inch marks as close to the bottom hem flange of the trunk lid as possible. Use care not to hit the center punch hard enough to dimple the metal around the hole.

3. Drill a 3/16 inch hole at both center punched locations. Catch the filings while drilling to help reduce clean up. Use care to avoid damaging the trunk lid outer panel when drilling.

4. Use primer, Mopar part number 4443636 or equivalent, and body color touch up paint to cover the edges of the two drilled holes.

Completion Reporting and Reimbursement

Claims for vehicles which have been serviced must be submitted on the DIAL System. Claims submitted will be used by Chrysler to record recall service completions and provide dealer payments.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION NOTIFICATION -
TRUNK LID MOISTURE DRAIN HOLES

Dear Chrysler Corporation Vehicle Owner:

The satisfaction of our customers is very important to Chrysler. Because of this, we are requesting owners of a small number of 1992 model Chrysler New Yorker Salon and Fifth Avenue vehicles to return them to their dealers for a special service repair.

Your vehicle, identified on the enclosed form, is affected. Therefore, we ask that you arrange for this important service repair without delay. The work as described in this letter will be provided free of charge.

The service is needed to add two small holes to the lower surface of the trunk lid inner panel to ensure proper moisture drainage. Without these holes, water trapped inside could cause corrosion of the trunk lid bottom hem flange.

The work will take less than one hour to complete. However, additional time may be required depending on how dealer appointments are scheduled and processed. To arrange for this important repair:

^ Contact your dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment for the free service.

^ Take the enclosed Owner Recall Notification Form with you at the time of your appointment and give it to your dealer. The form identifies the vehicle and the service that is required.

If you have any problem obtaining the needed repair, please contact the Chrysler Zone Service Office in your area. (It is listed under "Service Assistance" in your Owner's Manual.) A Zone representative will arrange for prompt attention to your vehicle.

We regret any inconvenience that this action may cause you. However, we believe that this special service will help to ensure your continuing satisfaction with your Chrysler Corporation vehicle.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
