DR-1A CODE to DR TEST Chart (Checking for Fault Codes)
*** Updated by TSB#183590, Nov 1990NOTE: The battery must be fully charged and at rated capacity before performing any driveability test procedure.
If the vehicle starts and stalls repeatedly, perform test NS-2A.
Connect the scan tool to the underhood diagnostic connector and then read fault codes. Refer to Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Procedures for procedures.
If the message is "NO FAULTS":
1. Start the engine and allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Run the engine at 2000 rpm for at least 10 seconds, then return to idle speed. NOTE: Set the speed manually, not with the scan tool.
3. For A/C equipped vehicles, turn on the A/C and set the blower motor on low speed. If the vehicle stalls with the A/C on:
a. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the engine controller connector.
b. Inspect the connector for damage, repairing as necessary.
c. Turn the ignition key on, put the scan tool in voltmeter mode, and check the engine controller connector DB wire at cavity 9.
d. If the reading is less than 10 volts, repair the open in the circuit. If the reading is more than 10 volts, replace the engine controller.
e. Perform VERIFICATION TEST 2.
4. For automatic transmission equipped vehicles, apply the brakes (parking and service) and shift through all the gears, returning to PARK when finished.
5. Read any fault codes with the scan tool.
If the scan tool still reads "NO FAULTS", check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins and Manual Updates. If an applicable Technical Service Bulletin is found, follow the repair procedures outlined in the bulletin. If driveability problems continue to occur after repairs are done, or there are no applicable bulletins, perform TEST DR-33A.
If the scan tool message is "INTERNAL CONTROLLER FAILURE":
1. Replace the engine controller.
2. Perform VERIFICATION TEST 2.
If the scan tool message is "ENGINE COLD TOO LONG":
1. Perform the necessary repairs to bring the cooling system into specifications.
2. Perform VERIFICATION TEST 3.
