Dealer and Service Manager Letters

ATTENTION OF DEALER PRINCIPAL AND SERVICE MANAGER


WITHHOLD DELIVERY UNTIL REPAIRED CERTAIN 1990 CAR AND GRAND MINIVAN MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 3.3L V-6 ENGINE


To: All Chrysler/Plymouth and Dodge Dealers

Subject: Replace Engine Valve Springs -- Withhold Delivery of Affected Vehicles Until Repair is Completed

Models: The following 1990 Models Equipped with the 3.3 Liter V-6 Engine:

^ C & Y-Body Cars -- Chrysler New Yorker, Fifth Avenue and Dodge Dynasty LE

^ S-Body Grand Models -- Grand Voyager, Grand Caravan, Grand Caravan C/V, and Town and Country

Enclosure: VIN Listing of Affected Vehicles Which are Still in Dealer Inventory According to Chrysler's Records.

Reference: E-Mail message to all dealers on October 18, 1989 from T.R. Cunningham.

Not@: The Imperial model was listed in the referenced E-Mail message. This
was an error. The Imperial is not affected and all Imperials can be delivered.


As was stated in the referenced E-Mail message, it is necessary for you to withhold delivery of the vehicles shown on the enclosed list until repairs can be made to prevent the possibility of engine valve spring failure.

The following summarizes the instructions and requirements for this program:

^ Do not deliver, put in demonstrator service or drive the listed vehicles until repairs are completed.

^ Only vehicles included on the enclosed list are to be repaired prior to being put into service -- other vehicles may have in inventory were built after the valve spring problem was corrected and do not require repairs.
^ By the week of October 30, we will distribute to dealers the service procedure and other program details.

^ Chrysler is currently expediting the procurement and packaging of the necessary parts for shipment to dealers. We expect to provide initial quantities (parts to cover 25% of vehicles) by 11/3/89 and additional quantities as available over the following few weeks. At present, this action is confined to undelivered units.

^ Should an owner experience a failure, all valve springs should be replaced, in addition to any other necessary repairs. Owners should also receive prompt, courteous service, a loaner vehicle and other reasonable conveniences.

We appreciate your cooperation and will continue to expedite all actions with regard to this program.

Subject: Withhold Delivery of Affected Vehicles until All Engine Valve Springs are Replaced.

Models: The following 1990 Models Equipped with the 3.3 Liter V-6 Engine:

^ C & Y-Body Cars -- Chrysler New Yorker, Fifth Avenue, Imperial and Dodge Dynasty LE Built prior to October 1, 1989. (MDH 10 01 XX)

^ S-Body Grand Models -- Grand Voyager, Grand Caravan, Grand Caravan C/V, and Town and Country Built Prior to October 1, 1989. (MDH 10 01 XX)

VIN Listing of Affected Vehicles Which are Still in Dealer Inventory According to Chrysler's Records will be supplied by mail by the week of October 23, 1989.


It is necessary for you to withhold delivery of the vehicles described above until repairs can be made to prevent the possibility of engine valve spring failure.

Due to a supplier heat treat defect, some springs may fail early in vehicle life and cause major engine damage. Obviously, this will cause extensive and costly service repairs and customer dissatisfaction. This is why we request your cooperation in withholding sale of the listed vehicles until valve spring replacement service is completed.
