Procedure B

1. Release the parking brake. Pump the service brake pedal several times.

2. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist and remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies.

3. With an appropriate drift punch, drive the brake shoe retainer pin out of the caliper (Refer to Figure 1).

4. Remove the two caliper mounting bolts (Refer to Figure 2).

5. Lift the caliper up and away from the brake disc. The brake shoes and the anti-rattle clip will be dislodged from the adapter assembly. Suspend the caliper on a wire hook. DO NOT allow the caliper assembly to hang by the hose.

6. Place a 1 in. thick wood block between the caliper piston and the caliper fingers. (Do not use a thinner block because this will result in the piston coming completely out of the bore).

7. Carefully depress the service brake pedal to push the piston against the wood block. Release the service brake pedal and remove the wood block.

8. Remove the rear parking brake cable retaining clips at the bracket near the front of the rear suspension trailing arm and caliper. Disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever of the caliper (Refer to Figure 3).

9. Disconnect the brake hose from the caliper.

CAUTION:
EXCESSIVE VISE PRESSURE WILL DAMAGE THE CALIPER.

10. Clamp the caliper assembly in a SOFT jaw vise.

11. Clean the area around the dust boot with Mopar Brake Parts Cleaner (P/N 4518037) or alcohol and wipe dry.

12. Remove the dust boot from the caliper and piston grooves and discard (Refer to Figure 4).

13. Clean the caliper grooves and the exposed part of the piston with Mopar Brake Parts Cleaner (P/N 4518037) or alcohol and wipe dry.

14. Coat the piston and new boot with fresh Mopar Brake Fluid (P/N 4318080) leaving a generous amount of fluid inside the boot.

15. Position the boot over the piston and into the groove of the piston (Refer to Figure 5).

16. Apply uniform pressure (to prevent cocking) to the piston until it bottoms in the bore of the caliper.

17. Position the dust boot in the counterbore of the caliper. Use special tool C-4383-7 and a hammer to seat the boot in the caliper counter bore (Refer to Figure 6).

18. Remove the caliper parking brake lever spring using a pair of pliers with approximately 1/2 in. wide jaws. Grasp the spring (Refer to Figure 7) and rotate clockwise until the spring disengages from the parking brake lever stop.

CAUTION:
INSERT PLASTIC OR RUBBER BETWEEN THE PLIERS JAWS AND THE SPRING TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE SPRING.

19. Install the appropriate new caliper parking brake lever spring by grasping the spring as illustrated in Figure 7 and rotating it counter-clockwise.

20. Install new brake shoes on the adapter assembly and carefully lower the caliper over the brake disc and shoes. The lower end of the caliper must be inserted into the adapter first (Refer to Figures 8 and 9). Do not install the caliper mounting bolts at this time.

21. Rest the caliper on the adapter, then insert the anti-rattle clip through the opening in the caliper. The lower portion of the clip must be placed in position first and then released (Refer to Figure 10). The clip should fall into the correct position on the brake shoes.

22. Install the brake shoe retainer pin through the caliper and brake shoes (Refer to Figure 11). Drive the brake shoe retainer pin into position with an appropriate drift punch.

23. Push down on the upper portion of the caliper (Refer to Figure 12). Some resistance will be encountered as the anti-rattle is compressed. Align and install the upper caliper mounting bolt first and then the lower mounting bolt. Torque the caliper mounting bolts to 192 In.Lbs. (25 N-m).

24. Install the brake hose to the caliper using 2 new seal washers (P/N 6030084). Torque to 19 - 29 ft.lbs. (26 - 40 N-m).

25. Install the parking brake cable into the caliper and the caliper parking brake lever and install the cable retainers at the caliper and the bracket at the front of the rear suspension trailing arm (Refer to Figure 3).

26. Repeat steps 3 through 25 for the other side.

27. Bleed the brake lines using the pressure or manual procedure described on pages 5-118 an 5-119 of the 1990 Front Wheel Drive Car Engine, Chassis & Body Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-0101).
