Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation

NOTE: Radiator cooling fan operation is controlled by the engine controller. The fan should run when the A/C compressor clutch is engaged or the engine coolant temperature set limit has been exceeded.

Switching through the engine controller provides fan control for the following conditions:
1. The fan will not run during engine cranking, regardless of engine temperature.
2. The fan will run at vehicle speeds above 40 mph only if coolant temperature reaches 230°F and will turn off when coolant temperature drops to 220°F.
3. At speeds below 40 mph the fan switches on at 210°F and off at 200°F.
4. To help prevent steaming, the fan will run when ambient temperature is below 60°F and coolant temperature is between 100-195° with engine at idle, for three minutes only.
