Convertible Boot Latch Rattle

MODELS:

1990 - 1994 (AJ) LeBaron Convertible

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 9/29/93 (MDH 0929XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Rattle in the rear quarter panel areas while driving. Noise usually occurs when the convertible boot latches are not being used to retain the boot.

DIAGNOSIS:





Inspect latch assembly for proper positioning inside the housing (Figure 1). If the latch is leaning to one side or the other and cannot be centered, proceed with the repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

2 4422269 Retainer, Folding Top Boot Latch

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing both convertible top boot latch retainers with a revised part.

1. Lower both door windows and rear quarter windows and lower convertible top.

2. Remove the latch assembly by reaching underneath the rear quarter trim panel and removing the 3/8" speed nut on the forward end of the assembly using a 3/8" nut driver or swivel ratchet.

3. Remove the phillips head screw from the top of the latch assembly. Push the latch assembly up and out of the quarter trim panel.





4. While holding the latch assembly intact, remove the two self tapping screws that hold the retainer to the latch mechanism (Figure 2). Install revised P/N 4422269 retainer noting the orientation of the screw hole slots.

5. Re-install the latch assembly into the quarter trim panel by performing steps 2 and 3 in reverse order.

6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 to the replace the opposite side latch assembly retainer.
