SYMPTON/CONDITION:

Vehicle exhibits a "Clicking/Snapping" noise from the left side of the engine compartment while accelerating or decelerating from a stop/or a "Clunking" noise from the front or right side of the engine compartment while shifting from park to drive, or park to reverse (neutral to first or neutral to reverse), or accelerating or decelerating from a stop.

DIAGNOSIS:

If the noise is coming from the left side of the engine compartment:

1. With the windows closed and engine running, apply a load to the engine while in drive (first) with the parking brake applied.
2. Release the load and shift into reverse.
3. While applying a load in reverse, with the brakes applied, listen for the "Clicking/Snapping" noise.
4. If no noise is heard, let the vehicle idle for approximately 15 minutes, (the "Clicking/Snapping" noise is more prevalent when the engine compartment is hot), and perform steps 1-3 again.
5. If noise cannot be heard, drive the vehicle in stop and go traffic while listening for the "Clicking/Snapping" noise.
6. If the noise is heard, replace the left engine support assembly. NOTE: THIS NOISE IS MORE NOTICEABLE FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE.

To diagnosis noise coming from the front or right side of the engine compartment two (2) procedures are provided (automatic transaxle or manual transaxle):

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE:

1. Raise the vehicle with an assistant inside the vehicle.
2. Start the vehicle and observe the front engine mount, while the assistant shifts from park to reverse and park to drive.

3. If there is a gap between the engine mount outer metal and insulator, see Fig. 1, replace the front engine insulator assembly. NOTE: THIS NOISE IS MORE NOTICEABLE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE.

MANUAL TRANSAXLE:

1. Raise the vehicle with an assistant inside of the vehicle.
2. Start the vehicle and observe the front engine mount, while the assistant shifts from neutral to first gear and neutral to reverse while releasing the clutch slightly.
3. If there is a gap between the outer metal and insulator, see Fig. 1, replace the front engine insulator assembly.
NOTE: THIS NOISE IS MORE NOTICEABLE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE.
